I have an Insinkerator garbage disposal capable of handling even the toughest of bones (although truth be told, I generally shy away from the heavy stuff). Hubby and I were watching that show "How It's Made" and they were showing an Insinkerator garbage disposal and said they test the blades on frozen pork bones and sure enough, they put them into the disposal and it made short work of them. They said it helps to sharpen the blades.

The only thing the instructions said not to put into the disposal was onion skins, so I don't, but everything else is fair game...corn on the cob, watermelon rinds, chicken bones, etc., everything else is fine, so far so good.

I put egg shells and rice in mine all the time!!!

You shouldn't put rice in it as it can swell and clog your pipes. I put chicken bones in mine, also fruit peels, melon rinds, eggshells, all kinds of left-overs from plates. You shouldn't use the GD with any fibrous food like celery, potato peels and I actually ruined one with artichoke leaves.

Anything that will expand in water should not be put into a garbage disposal, including rice, at least these are the things that have caused problems for me.

Silica gel is not a food, why would anyone put that down a disposal?

I have had one for years. I use some of the egg shells and coffee grinds in the garden, but put most other food waste down the drain using the disposal. I sometimes overload it with too many vegetable peelings, etc, something needing my attention.

Only 50% of people have garbage disposals. That is kind of a shock to me.

I would think the number would be higher. I can't imagine not having one or having one and not using it.

I grew up without one. DH always had one. It was very hard for my to get my brain wrapped around putting garbage down the drain. I use it on a limited basis. No grease, no bones, just soft stuff. I will put grease in an empty jar or can and put it in the trash. I could definitely live without one.

I have always had a garbage disposal - I put everything but coffee grounds down mine and have yet never even had to have one repaired, in 31 years of use. I peel all fruit and veggies into the sink and put the peels and cores down the disposal. About once a week i put a glass full of ice in there with a few Tbsp of baking soda to clean it - keeps it smelling fresh. For some reason they say you should only use cold water when you use the disposal - so i do that.

When we go to our camp to stay in the summer I don't have a disposal and I miss it terribly. I notice that we certainly have much more trash daily without it.

Almost all the stuff people said don't put down them (potato skins, onion skins, rice, egg shells, etc. etc) goes down mine all the time. We have the Insinkerator brand as well and got the biggest one we could put in. I would absolutely HATE to not have a garbage disposal. My mom won't use hers and it is a real pain to cook and clean up there.

We cook at home a lot, cut up a lot of veggies and make a lot of chicken and soups. It would be a real mess not to put the leavings in the sink, turn on the water and be rid of it.

Ok so why would anything that is in the disposal expand? It gets pulverized in the disposal then it gets flushed out into the sewer system. It is not sitting there in the disposal or in your pipes from your house to the street.That is why you are running water while using it - to flush everything out. honestly! After i run the disposal i am loading the dishwasher and running it, I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wipe off the kitchen surfaces and then dump that down the drain- how much water do you ladies think it takes to get stuff out to your sewer ?
