Don't know if anyone would be interested, but I found this in a Creative Ideas magazine today--it's a concrete block planter that you can easily make....I think it would look great combined with the galvanized containers..I like the terracotta color with the concrete and the galvanized pieces. Terracotta planters can be expensive-this would be a great inexpensive alternative. And another idea I've seen that I like is the juxtaposition of pretty colorful ceramic pieces or containers with the galvanized/concrete block/rustic look.. ....instructions for this planter are found at

I have two old galvanized watering cans. One is outside, the smaller inside. I also have a galvanized flour can & a pitcher I use for flowers.
Forgot my galvanized wash tub I use for an outside planter. We have a guy with 2 acres full of old stuff dirt cheap.

Supposedly! I have not tried it yet, will do when it warms up.
I'm trying acidic toilet cleaner right now on a watering can bought last year at walmart. It was still mostly shiny and new looking when I started. I'll report back.

Sharing my experiment. Thanks, whitelinen, for the info. :-)
I used Zep yesterday afternoon. Wiped on and left for 1 hour, then rinsed off and let dry. I didn't see much change, so I reapplied, left on for about 3 hours--I forgot about it--rinsed, using a scrub pad to be sure I got it all off, and let dry.
I didn't take a before pic, but it was just a typical shiny galvanized finish.
Notice irregularities in last photo. Some rusty areas appeared, too. I suggest trying this on something inexpensive or unimportant to begin with. My can is just that, a basic can that I use to water some of my flowers, so it didn't matter to me how it turned out.
Sorry the pics are so huge. When I tried resizing, the finish on the can didn't show up very well.

This side is very odd!

Whitelinen~did you pick up your containers from WM? How do you like them?
I went to pick up mine today and they arrived dented. They refunded my money. I might re-order them if I can find a place to use them. They would be beautiful with boxwood plants. I thought about them, after getting a refund and really couldn't think of where I would use them. I have many pink ceramic pots outside in the front that I fill with flowers every year. Maybe the pierced olive basket look wasn't the best with my pink pots. I did love them though.
Let us know how yours turn out after you make them vintage looking, and what you eventually plant in them.

Nice job, SHOPR. The cans look like they were buried in the back of someone's barn for 50 years. Just the way they should look.

SHOPR--it turned out great!!! Thanks so much for posting. I am encouraged!!
Plan on picking up my baskets tomorrow Rosehill. So sorry to hear yours were not in good shape. If mine are I will try again. Sounds like they may be made cheaply tho.
Have the littles the rest of the week, and work the WE so I don't know when I will be able to get to the aging process. I am excited about trying it. I thinks SHOPR's can turned out super nice.
