My sofa set in the living room is 10 years old (sofa, loveseat and chair).  The fabric looks like the day we bought them, but we're starting to "sink" in the cushions.  I purchased those boards that you place under the cushions, but they did not offer much help.

We use our living room almost every day - so they do get a lot of use.

  • How long does your furniture last (sofa, loveseat & chair sets)  when used pretty much daily?

  • I'm thinking of purchasing my next set from Lazy Boy.  If you've purchased furniture from them were you happy with the quality of the furniture?

Thank you!

Re: Furniture Questions

[ Edited ]

In the past, like you, I always had problems with sofa cushions sinking, getting soft with no support.  I spoke with a furniture store owner (family owned and operated) in our area who has been in business for decades.  Told him of the problem and he said to only seek out USA made sofas and, even then, not all are equal.  He told me about a company called Kincaid who made quality sofa (and other furniture) and only used solid wood and quality manufacturing in their cushions.  That company sells its sofas in many furniture stores.  I bought a Kincaid sofa and am not one bit sorry.  As soon as you sit on it, you know the difference.

Here is a little bit about them.  You can Google where they are sold in your area.

Kincaid

How many cushions: 1, 2, or 3? Do you want a rounded or flat back? It seems that Kincaid offers just about any high quality constructed style of sofa you possibly could be looking for. The company has been making furniture in North Carolina since the 1940s, and they still use solid wood construction, English dovetails, and hand rubbed finishes. Choose from one of Kincaid’s designs, or custom design your own. Check the Kincaid website to locate a dealer near your home.

We just bought new furniture from Lazy Boy this month to replace our previous Lazy Boy furniture. We have been very happy with their quality, selection and customer service.

@BunSnoop.  If you want seat cushions that stay firm, buy a sofa bed.  They have the mattress and structure of the frame to support the load on the cushions.

Re: Furniture Questions

Nearly 49 years of marriage and we've had 4 sofas.  We're at the 10 year mark with the current sofa and loveseat; they still look new, but I'm ready for new.

I've decided I'm done with a sofa; plan to keep the loveseat and buy 2 chairs.  Vaughn Bassett, Kincaid and England are my go to brands.

@BunSnoop I purchased a very pretty sofa, a pair of chairs, coffee table and a small side table for my living room from Lazy Boy in 2020.  I love that they offer a lot of different fabrics to chose from for almost everything to give you a custom look!  So far the furniture has held up well....no problems

My older living room sofa was a floral thing and very dated looking.  It was from Ethan Allen and was in excellent condition.  It was from the mid 1990's....it was time for a fresh & updated look.

Right now I am dealing with Raymour & Flanigan.  My brother moved into an over 55 community ten minutes from me and purchased a whole house of furniture....living room sofa, tables & chair, bedroom set, kitchen set and another sofa & chairs for his sunroom.  No problems at all.

I went shopping with him to help him pick items out.  I purchased a loveseat, desk & an office chair from them...so far the desk was damaged, they replaced it within two days but the office chair has two deep scratches in the back and they are going to come over to see if it can be fixed...I am getting frustrated since I think they should replace it with a new one!  It was something that they stock so it's not a custom piece.

They delivered it on Thursday when I had an emergency dental appointment so DH was home to sign for it.  Of course he didn't take a good look to see if it was okay and now I have to deal with this problem.

Make sure when you get new furniture you ask about potential problems and how they handle it.

I would call someone that works on furniture and see if you can get the cushions restuffed if the couch still looks good.

@BunSnoopIf you feel like you are ready to purchase new after 10 years of heavy use I agree with @ciao_bella buy US made furniture. Huge difference in quality and longevity.  Bernhardt is my go to brand and have purchased sofas and chairs from them in the past. They've been leather and hold up incredibly well and they also have fabric upholstery.

I just replaced a 30 year old Broyhill sofa and loveseat purchased in 1991.  Talk about time for new family room furniture. it was now.  No small children, but the fabric was starting to show wear and the cushions were starting to get out of shape.  I wish today, I could find furniture that would last that long.  I ordered a nice set from Overstock and it was a total nightmare with delivery. It was delivered wrapped on a pallet and left in my  driveway by an 18 wheeler.  They were susposed to unwrap it and let u check for damage.  Luckily it was not damagaed, but a pain to put inside. But years ago I paid 1500.00 just for the Broyhill sofa and at the time I thought that was expensive.  I looked at Lazy Boy and u had to order their furniture and sofas started at 2000.00 and wait 6 weeks for delivery, No way!

If your furniture is of good quality, don't replace it, repair it.  Springs can be retied or replaced, cushions can be replaced, cover can be reupholstered.  A good upholsterer can even change the shape of the back and arms if you want a slightly different style.
