Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

For those of you who live in Florida and have hardly seen a bug, consider yourself lucky! We lived in two locations of Florida but we had the most roaches in Tampa ( you can call them Palmetto bugs (flying roaches) or anything you want, they are still roaches). I will never forget that there were 4 roaches on our front stoop when we pulled up to move into the new house we had just had built. I hated to use chemical sprays all over the house so that is why I switched to Boric Acid ( put it under sinks where pets cannot get at it). My new house was immaculate but I NEVER got up in the middle of the night or I knew I would see a roach in the kitchen. I loved the warm weather but hated those ugly bugs. I was told they lived in the palm trees. Still have nightmares about those roaches.

I'm not in Florida but when I lived in an apartment and my neighbors had a lot of ROACHES who ran over to my place...I had to have a contract with ORKIN and it worked. I had to have a permanent contract and I never stopped it will I lived at that complex. Once they start coming once a month, and set the insecticides outside and create the BARRIER the problem will be GONE. You can't do treatment once a month, then stop for 3 months then start again. It must be CONSISTANT.

Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

We are surrounded by trees. We have an exterminator drop bait outside the house every two months. I won't let them spray in the house because of the dog. I have also spread Bay leaves and lavender buds around the kitchen drawers and closet shelves. Also use vinegar to clean counters. Don't have any bugs in the house.

Well you can stop for three months -then blame your poor Orkin man that you got re-infested. {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

You are right, you have to have that barrier. They can also work with you if you have pets, as I always have.

The pest control companies service hospitals and restaurants -so they know how to treat safely and design a plan to fit your circumstances.

What about those plug in pest repellants? I recall seeing a set of six on H*N last week. Each one was a sensor night light.

Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

I put up with bugs and all manner of varmints living in Houston for over 30 years. I can't tell you what a relief it is to get away from that, and all the heat and humidity. I have not seen a roach or flea since I left the gulf coast area. In my neighborhood we don't even have mosquitos; I sit on the patio every evening to watch the mountains turn pink when the sun sets, and have never gotten a mosquito bite. My only bug problem is ticks in the spring. The dogs bring them inside and I'm constantly battling them, then about the first of June they disappear. They are not the deer ticks that cause Lyme Disease. We don't have those here but the can transmit Rocky Mountain Fever.

Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

I've never stayed in a private home in FL, only hotels. I had no idea that cockroaches were a problem there. Don't think I could handle that! I do remember those *No See Ums* were torture. That I couldn't live with either!!

Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

It's not just Florida....it's any southern state. I live in coastal Georgia. We have gnats, mosquitos, and oh, the flys --- yuck. Ticks, fleas, roaches, termites, spiders, ants, moths.....you name it, we have it and most of them we have year round.

It takes constant vigilance with a good exterminator, but even then you can't go outside without bug spray all over you, you absolutely must keep your pets on a good heartworm medicine because of the mosquitos and fleas.

I had someone tell me once that the ground doesn't get cold enough to kill off any of the bugs, so, we always have them.

Re: Flordia State Bug Problem

To the poster who commented on stink bugs: we've reduced significantly the number of such visitors over the last few years. Our exterminator sprays outside where the entry points are twice over a 6 week period. The spraying has to be done late August/ early September and then in a few weeks. It takes time, bit it does reduce the head count tremendously. (SE Pennsylvania).
