@ThinkingOutLoud   Thank you for the suggestion.  It's not a wooden bowl though.  It's Raku pottery and has a design on it that I wouldn't want to cover up.  The only thing I ever put in it are Christmas cards and birthday cards.

Just a couple suggestions to tweak - 

~ move the candle to the middle (for better balance)

~ put a candy dish on top of the books (homey feel, adds layer, balances height of bowl...)
