Re: Fall decorating question

I have been more drawn to more subtle decorating lately.  An arrangement of fall colored books, bittersweet, candles in vintage thrift candlesticks.  I like to frame dried maple leaves, poetry, and use collected pottery.    I've moved to things that bring joy and not keep up with the trends.

Re: Fall decorating question

We enjoy the change of seasons, and I do decorate for each in a rather sparse fashion.  I have a Luminara lantern on my round kitchen table and change a decorative wreath around it for the season, as an example.  Plus a door arrangement.

Christmas is different.  I still enjoy Christmas decor in our main living areas, despite all the work it brings.  The trick is to start early and do it slowly.  And we leave the winter themed up well after Christmas is technically over.  It brightens our long winter.

Re: Fall decorating question

When I was growing up my family did as you mentioned @YellowLabMom - just mums and pumpkins. When I was a young adult things changed. People went all out to decorate outside and inside. I was decorating for fall long before I discovered QVC and Valerie!

We put mums on each side of the front door. I sprayed mini hay bales years ago with hairspray so they would last, and I put pumpkins on top. DH put hay stalks he used to cut down (now we buy them) on each side of our outer porch and our front street light. This is what we've done for years, and we still do it with a few changes.

In this area people decorate a lot. It's fun to drive around and see all of the decorations.

We decorate for Halloween too of course, but only "cute" Halloween!  Smiley Wink

Re: Fall decorating question

My kids were always envious of the neighbors' Halloween decorations.  I'm not at all a fan of Halloween, so I appeased them by decorating for autumn, instead.  I leave my autumn decor until Thanksgiving weekend, when I switch to Christmas.  In both cases, I keep it simple.  Less is more, in my opinion.

Re: Fall decorating question

I have a few sparse decorations from my grandparents who decorated for most seasons/ Holidays & my mom did/does as well. I do too! We've always lived on the East Coast up North, so maybe experiencing a true 4 season climate was part of that?!

I have dedicated space for Seasonal stuff & if something new I buy won't fit in its container/s for that Holiday/Season, than something has to be donated/trashed/moved out! I always keep true sentimental pieces. I also change out front door wreaths & a small flag by front door monthly! That's something I started doing.

Re: Fall decorating question

I too live in the northeast and totally enjoy our 4 seasons, yes even winter!   I decorate for the seasons, not for each holiday.  Of course more so in fall and winter.  I think the trick is to not overdue it, as another poster stated less is more.   You can ruin the coziness you are going for with too much decor, IMO.

Re: Fall decorating question

I really enjoy the fall season so I do decorate both inside and outside. I joke that I have a pumpkin problem. I started collecting pumpkin shaped candles when Candle Impressions first started making them. I use them all over the house. I do the mantle, the hutch, upstairs on my bookcase. I don't usually put batteries in them, I just like their look. Of course now I've added Luminara candles in the fall colors, etc. so it's layered. I'll try and take a picture of my mantle since I added my Jim Shore witches but it's not finished yet since it was too nice to be inside yesterday.

the nice thing is that I can do this now and it will look fine through to Thanksgiving, I'll just remove the overly Halloween items from it and poof, it's fall again.

To each their own. I enjoy it so I do it.

Re: Fall decorating question

I don't decorate anymore but when I did Fall was my favorite time to decorate.

The 1st time I went whole hog with Fall decorating I had corn stalks tied to the front porch posts, pumpkins etc., the whole 9 yards. I looked great until....................the neighbors cows got out, saw my front porch and decided to have lunch.  I found them munching on my corn stalks and stepping on the pumpkins they knocked off the steps.

After that I kept my major decorating indoors.

Re: Fall decorating question

LOL that's cool. I have a metal black cat cutout that I put next to the back gate. Years ago I bought a set of lights that have a flickering flame effect and after a bit of work with some tape, I managed to get two of the lights to fit directly behind the openings for the eyes so the cat has eyes that flicker red.

This year I found another cat cut out that has lights already behind the eyes and it's battery operated. Yes, I had to have it so now there will be two in the yard.

The mail delivery person seems to enjoy my display. I never get trick or treaters where I live, this is all for my own entertainment.
