I love my soaking tub, but I like that it is built into a deck so that I have the ledge for my shampoo, etc. I also like the ledge to sit on when doing personal maintenance on my feet. I think the stand-alone tubs are beautiful, but I like the function of mine better. I wouldn't want a sunken tub. I think they are difficult to clean and not too functional. I don't understand why they became popular.

This is not my bathroom, but the tub set-up is similar except the shower is on the other side of the room.

I have a pet peeve with the free standing tubs, especially the slipper style ones with no legs, being placed too close to a wall. Set a ring or something on the back edge of the tub and knock it off and it falls behind the tub and you're in for a fight to retrieve it. You can't just slide the tub out to clean behind it, or retrieve something, but a lot of designers put the tubs just an inch or two away from the wall. Painting, wallpapering, cleaning the wall or retrieving something that falls in that gap is nearly impossible with the tub that close to a wall.

Bathrooms are humid, damp areas that can lead to mold and mildew growth. That wall behind a slipper style tub and that back wall of the tub itself, and the floor space behind the tub, are prime areas for unchecked mold/mildew growth if the tub is placed too close to the wall.

Move the tub a foot or more from the wall so you can reach into the area and I'm fine with them, but put them closer to the wall and you'll grow to hate the tub in short order.

I think they're pretty to look at, but I would much rather have the largest shower I could fit in the bathroom.

I don't take baths, and I couldn't wait for my kids to stop taking them also. I hated cleaning the tub more than anything else.

I sold my house almost four years ago and it didn't have a bath tub. People don't seem to care one way or the other. If they like the house, they will buy it.

I love the idea of a free standing tub. I think it's easier to clean. I've always thought that a sunken tub would be a bit dangerous.

@feline groovy I'm a shower person too but nothing like a good soak. If I had a really large bathroom I would put in one of the above about a 70" plus a huge fancy walk in shower.

Yay for me - if I liked bathtubs. Totally cool looking and not just a boring ol' bathtub!

(I personally think a big walk in tiled shower with a built in bench would be so much better! Maybe with two entrances and a curved wall with one or two of those large rain shower heads hung overhead from the ceiling). Yep. Sounds like a plan! 😀

I have a pretty large bathroom. It's a blessing and a curse. I like it being so large but it's definitely expensive to repair and update. I'm not planning on moving any plumbing. My tub is way on the other end of the bathroom from the shower. I have a large enough area to fit at least a 72 inch free standing tub. The shower is also large with two benches (I think the previous owners enlarged it when they put steam in it). Unfortunately, it's the tub and shower that leak. We are not sure if we're keeping Mr. Steam. I had someone come out to take a look at it before work started. The system is about 7-8 years old and he says they usually last about 8-10 years, sometimes 12. I picked out my vanities yesterday along with the countertop. Having the most trouble with tile. Tile for the floor and shower. I don't want the tile (expecially on the floor ) to contrast terrrible with the beautiful slab I picked for the countertops. I checked with our realtor, either tub would be fine for resell purposes. She just said never take away a tub in the house and that people just want to see that the house has been updated.

I have to agree with your husband. I have a feeling that though they are gorgeous (I like the modern looking pedestal tubs) they just might be a fad that will last a few years....sort of like pedestal sinks. Pretty but not practical.

I also have a large...huge really sunken tub in our master bath. I like the fact that you can place things like extra towels, a book a glass of wine (now I'm dreaming since I rarely do this), etc. around the ledge. Where do you put stuff like that with the free standing ones?

Our house is 25 years old and we've remodeled almost everything but the master bath. It's time to do so soon. We never got the jacuzzi with jets (I'm so glad we did not!) but all of the tile work, shower, toilet, sinks and cabinetry need to be replaced.

Instead of replacing the tub I'm going to look into having it repainted professionally....I'm not really looking forward to the new mess and expense!
