I thought exactly the same thing, @stevieb --  it does look as though the apartment is sort of "below grade" a bit.  I wondered,  is it really "sunken",  or is it just a ground floor apartment, flat on the ground.  When he's in his courtyard, he almost looks like he's at the bottom of a well!  

His apartment is darling-- although, I might get a bit antsy over time with those red tiles in kitchen, ha.  If you get a chance, since you love tablescapes, check out the video where he gives a tour of his china closet-- he has wonderful dishes and loves to collect....

Edited to add--  oh, I just saw your "Doeskin",  @stevieb -- another good one!  To me, these are interesting, complex neutrals.

@Tadaki  It really is a great color and looks even better on the walls. There is so much depth and so many shades come to life when you see it in person.

Don't get me wrong, @tiny 2 ,  I can enjoy touches of red, and love it at Christmas.  And two of my favorite pieces of art in the living room prominently feature red.  It could just be my monitor, but those kitchen tiles he has looked to me to be an orange-red, veering more toward tomato.  I tend to prefer blue-based reds.  But now I'll have to go back and give them another look, ha!
