sorry @house_cat i just do not like the plastic on top, but your tablecloth is pretty.
i have nice tablecloths that we use and i just deal with them getting a bit stained.
i either wash them and have them pressed OR if they are bad i wash them, then let the dry cleaners have a go at them if the stains dont come out.
have purchased a few vintage tablecloths from etsy and ebay. i do enjoy using them i just dont WORRY about using them. i always know that if they get that bad i can find another one that i will enjoy just as much.

Thank you for sharing. That table is the hub of my small townhome. The downstairs includes the kitchen, which is too small for a table, dining "room", living room and powder room. Everything happens at that table... breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, lesson planning, grading papers, rolling pie dough, paying bills... you name it and it happens there. Add to that the fact that my son has different hours than we do and he often eats meals in between our meals. If I had a stop-action video of that room, you'd laugh at the amount of activity. The table top is rustic, sturdy wood and it's almost always "naked" unless we have guests. If I want to keep a cloth on it throughout the season, there is no other option than to cover it.
I get it! We do have a smaller table in a kitchen “nook”, that’s where things happen. I did see your mention that you have one table, but thought it might be worth a mention.
So, another thought, you might consider Scotchguard-ing it very lightly. However, you would really want to test a tiny bit to make sure.
Enjoy your great find!

Funny you should say that! While my boys both said it reminded them of their grandmother, my niece said that, too, but she said that it made her happy to think of Grandma's house 💕
I have the can of Scotchguard and was intending to use it, but in this case it wasn't a good option. Normally when I use my vintage linens, I just try to be careful. This is the first time I've resorted to the plastic.

Beautiful tablecloth! I think I would use it in a decorative way, only. I know you said you only have one dining table, so you have to protect it
I don't care for the way the plastic cover sticks out as it drops over the sides of the table.

@catwhisperer I had a friend at my last job who told me her living room furniture was covered like this!

I'm not a fan of plastic covering anything....lamp shades, sofas, chairs, tableclothes or anything else! But as others have said, it's your home. I think the opinion of your hubby and sons is important though and should be considered.

I think it looks fine with the plastic. Your reason is practical. Its a beautiful cloth and I am in agreement with you. The less you wash and iron it the longer it will look beautiful.

I'm not really entitled to an opinion on this thread, since my dining room table is glass and I've never been into vintage anything. When we have guests and use the table I use runners and place mats and it's an easy cleanup and I like the open space a glass top provides to give the room a more spacious look.
That said, if you love vintage table cloths and your table is almost always in use for eating and other family activities, I say go for it if it makes you happy. It's your home.

@house_cat I think what you did to preserve the vintage cloth that makes you happy, preserves it, and still be able to enjoy it, is fine.
Not knocking the young folks or your husband, of course, but you are probably the one that most appreciates the look of the cloth, wanting to preserve it, and at the same time are creating wonderful experiences for your husband, the younger ones, and guests by taking good care of them and the house and for sharing your cooking and everything else so graciously.
I say keep using the plastic topper; long after you are gone the younger ones may think back to that tablecloth and "topper" memories as a very happy one associated with your heart so full of love and caring for others.
What makes a house a home is being the kind of person you are by being warm and hospitable. Enjoy and protect your tablecloth with a clear conscience and a glad heart!
Happiest of New Years to you and your loved ones,
