I would prefer if they had timers but if I can't find a light with a timer I will have to go with ones that do not have timers - size is the most important consideration.
Knowing me, I'd try to dremel the opening of the item I was trying to light just to make the 1 1/2" votive fit... But I've been know to do odd stuff like that. Sometimes it works great, and other times...not so much!

Would those batter operated strands of LED lights work? Some are very small and thin as a wire, with multiple lights in them. Could you put the whole strand up in the piece and spread them out for even lighting? I'm assuming that each piece is enclosed and the wire and lights wouldn't show from the outside.

No way I am taking any chance of breaking these - they are precious to me.

I bought a 2 sets of those thinking the same thing - the smallest ones I could find but it was way too bright when all those lights were lit together in one small piece. I don't want them lit blaring - I want them softly lit. We are going to use those lights elsewhere.

Department 56 makes a battery-operated Display Anywhere Retrofit Kit for exactly this purpose. They are a little expensive, though.

I found some tiny book lights at Big Lots last year.

The top center of my ent. center has 2 separated lights that have a push button to turn on and off. That way my nativity scene or my beautiful colored glass display look very pretty. Can you install 2 small lights above what you display there?

Staple an inexpensive piece of fabric to the back of the entertainment center. All the cords would dangle behind that & none would show from the front. You might have to cut some kind of ventilation holes if you have electronic equipment, like tv and/or stereo.

Have you tried the battery operated light strands from Dollar Tree? Each strand only has 10 LED lights, so I was thinking they might not be as bright as whatever strands you already tried that were too bright. They do not have timers, though.

These are pictures of them for sale on their website.

I had no idea! That's a good idea, but pricey.
