Re: Do you have a housekeeper

No. Don't need one. Our house is large and has 4 1/2 baths, etc. but with a little planning we can manage very nicely to keep things neat and clean on our own. We vacuum twice a week, dust twice a week, clean bathrooms once a week (we only use two of the baths), keep the kitchen spotless on a daily basis, and do laundry each evening. Once a week I clean out the refrigerator, and once a month I do the freezers. when we move a car out of the garage, we blow out the leaves and dust while it's gone, and I blow off the terraces daily when needed (fall mostly). We have one of the ErgoRapido vacs from Electrolux, and that does a great job of picking up pup fuzz and small droppings in the kitchen and baths. You can do it yourself if you've a mind to!!

So far, in spite of our ages, things are clean. And we really don't feel we need inside help. Outside, DH is going to have to get some help. His age (95 this year) is making it harder every day.

Re: Do you have a housekeeper

I have two ladies that work together and they come in once a month and deep clean the whole house. They do an amazing job and do all the baseboards and blinds and just all the things that need to be cleaned. Then they do the normal stuff like vacuuming, cleaning the hardwood floors all the bathrooms and all the appliances. It is wonderful and then I just keep it up in between. Worth every penny. We have a five bedroom house with four bathrooms and it cost $120.00 for them to come in and clean. I also tip them. It is just my husband and myself so it is pretty easy to keep it up.

When our kids were very small, (had 4 under 5 years of age) we had a lady (wife of a migrant worker) come in when they were in town. She would come one day a week to clean; also did our ironing - only reason she did it for me and four friends was so she could watch her soaps every day while she ironed as she didn't have a TV. Also, made THE BEST sweet potato pie EVER.

You haven't seen or read "The Help", have you? {#emotions_dlg.devil2}{#emotions_dlg.sneaky}{#emotions_dlg.scared}

Actually, no. Why do you ask? It's been on my Kindle for a long time, but haven't gotten around to reading it; too many other good books to read, and not enough time.

There is a "pie" scene in it. When you read the book, check back in! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I choose NOT to have one. If I was disabled or such I suppose it might be something that would be needed. I do not like strangers cleaning my dirt I guess... I would rather do it myself.

I have two actually. Their names are Classylady and her handsome man!{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Honestly, I don't mind the cleaning and we share everything.

We had one, she was pretty good too, but, I found myself straightening up before she came. Honestly, I enjoy doing it myself. Turn on some music and get busy. Id rather have the 80.00 a week in my pocket!

Re: Do you have a housekeeper

Two of my daughters had housekeepers and got rid of them. They both said they had to 'clean up' before the housekeeper came.

My middle daughter has ADD and could be the poster child for perfectionist when it comes to housecleaning, so I wasn't surprised when she got rid of her housekeeper.

The oldest one made the most sense when she said, "Mom, if I don't pick up every loose thing around the room and put things in their place, the housekeeper wastes time doing that instead of taking the time allowed to clean the toilet and clean the floors.

Makes sense. Thinking about that.....as bad as my house is the housekeeper would have to move into my house and never leave, work from morning to night and never finish!

I live by myself now, and still have someone come in once a week. God didn't put me on the planet to clean house; otherwise, I would be doing it for a business and make lots of money doing so.{#emotions_dlg.devil2}

When we were younger, it was a necessity - we had small children, went to school and worked. Took planning so that one of us was always home when they came in from school and for meals. Later, when it was just us, having a housekeeper gave us a lot more free time.

When we both retired from corporate (I've always continued to work and go to school; I still work as a PA, CDE, and PC even though I could just goof off; I don't know how NOT to work - been working since I was 10), a housekeeer gave us more time for each other and to travel. It was our theory that if either of us died the next day, the dirt would still be there, so we kept housekeepers to keep the house livable.

When our kids were living at home, we went places with them. Weekends were NEVER a time to clean or do household and yard chores; it was a time to spend as family. When our youngest died at 24, we were always glad to have had those free weekends to spend with him when he was growing up.

When i was a kid we spent the weekends together as a family - helping my Mom do the housework andlaundry and yard work and whatever other chores there were that needed done.IMO - this is something desparately missing in modern families - having the children accept responsibility for doing chores and doing them properly. We absolutely, under almost no circumstances were allowed to go out on Saturday until everything was done. Even dad had chores to do - the house was cleaned, the laundry and ironing done, the yard work done , repairs done before any soul was allowed to leave that house. There were , of course exceptions on rare occasions, like a wedding or something, but in general - we knew from a very young age that we should not make any plans for saturdays. When mama works to provide for the family it is the entire families responsibility to do the jobs at home with her. Not all "family time" has to be fun time -sometimes it is pull together to get the job done time.

Re: Do you have a housekeeper

We don't have a housekeeper, per se, because I would not want a live-in and it's not in my budget to pay a full-time person.

But we do have a cleaning lady who comes in regularly to clean only.
