Dehumidifiers and Humidity

I am new to a humid area. I bought a dehumidifier, finally {#emotions_dlg.blink}. In 36 hours I have dumped out 12 1/2 gallons of water!!! {#emotions_dlg.crying}. Is this normal? Those of you who live in a humid area, does everyone have a dehumidifier? How many? One for each floor? Do I only have to deal with this in the summer? I am in the mid Atlantic and we had two tropical storms so maybe this is unusual?
