If you can tolerate non-blooming green plants, I'd definitely use ferns, palms, or other greenery in attractive planters to soften the area and give it a bit of a tropical porch feel. You can also use outdoor rugs, statuary, fountains, and porch furniture with pretty, colorful cushions to make the area more "room-like".

Mousiegirl, Unfortunately, the blog doesn't give a source for the metal flowers only the information that the picture was shot in Prescott, Arizona in 2011. I did find one artist in upstate New York, Steven Cooper, who is known for large metal flower sculptures, but I'm guessing they would be pretty expensive.

Re: Decorating a deck without flowers

My deck is decorated with beautiful pillows and cushions. People stop to look and ask me about them all of the time. I have them on a bench and on my chairs. I also have a couple of those pouffy ottomans that you can sit on in bright colors. I love flowers, but have found that the blooms fall off and stain the deck. ( mine is painted white)

If you want the look of flowers, I have had the Bethlehem Lights hanging baskets and I think they are nice. They come with and without lights now, and can give you the look of plants without the care, fuss, or allergies. They sit nicely in pots, in case you don't have a place to hang them.

These are a little different than the ones shown above, but they're metal, cute and inexpensive. They're from Terry's Village and are on sale now!

Plant tomato plants in a pot. Decorative green and you get tomatos at the same time.
