I enjoy looking at pics posted here but don't know how to attack decorating my home: flooring, paint, furniture.  I need new flooring and don't want to make a costly or regrettable mistake.  How to select decorating advisor?

You can hire a decorator to put a whole room together for you or you can use the decorators available at each of the stores, ie the flooring store, the paint store, the furniture store....

I think it would depend on how much help you actually need.

I know what you mean. Need to gut our kitchen but Covid happened so we are waiting. Cannot have someone start that gets sick & cannot finish. We use our kitchen daily.

I want to hire a designer to tell them what I want to do to make sure it won't look out of place if you know what I mean once it's finished.

I use Pinterest and Apartment Therapy for  inspiration but if it were a reno project I'd hire a professional.

@Nightowlz

When renovating kitchen I visited several kitchen renovating centers and discussed their ideas.  Culmination of ideas helped.  Usually can't take plans with you but you get ideas and might find contractor in process.

My project not so much renovation - want to work with my bones.

I only know of 2 places in town since we live in a smaller area. Leary of letting someone come in my house to do that type work. We have always done things ourselves. If they are not doing things like I think it should be I will have to boot them out.

A guy that worked with DH fired 2 different crews & retired so he could finish his kitchen?

We had to boot the guy working on one bathroom when we did not like what he was doing so DH finished it.

Always start with a budget, even for the smallest project.

@Twins Mom - Just an idea:  If I were in your shoes I would do research, then come here to get advice. Some might think I was crazy to get decorating advice from a forum, but I think there are a lot of talented people here, and almost all of us have decorated a home by making selections. So I would consult my online friends!  Smiley Happy

@Twins Mom  I love watching HGTV. I have gotten so many ideas from those shows. Right now I am in love with "Christina on the Coast". She's a great designer and they have a lot of "flooring talks" with her designs.

One of the flooring companies, I can't remember which one it is, has an app where you take a picture of the room and then try the various styles of flooring out.
