Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Well, I don't have much to contribute. My efforts have certainly slowed down.

I did go through my jewelry box and decided to rid myself of several watches I was holding onto. Why? I don't know, because I stopped wearing watches several years ago. Isn't it funny how we change? There was a time when if I left the house without a watch I felt bare naked!

This probably doesn't count, but I broke my "no buy clothing" conviction this summer because I was in need of some new summer tops, pants, shorts, etc. Well, I decided I had gone overboard, so I returned 5 or 6 tops the other day.  It made me feel good to not be so excessive.

Finally, a confession...do you remember reading the old compacting thread about posters who had amassed so much in the way of toiletries/cosmetics? Oh my gosh, I fear I am headed in that direction, kind of unbeknownst to me.  I keep toiletries in 6 linen-type tubs inside of an armoire. I was desperately looking for hair glaze the other day and could not believe all the duplicates, triplicates (and more) of things like shampoos, conditioners, body washes, hand soaps, etc.

I don't mean to buy more or stock up, but when Whole Foods or my co-op has 30% off on all their bodycare, skincare and cosmetics, I guess I have been randomly throwing things in my cart. I need to do a much better job of walking on by.🥺

Ladies, keep up the good work. Reading your stories inspires me!

Been reading you're all pretty busy!

Me not so much! Going to attack freezer tonight - I don't think it's too bad, but we shall see! Talking freezer in fridge not free standing one in garage - NOT that brave!

Nothing new for me since last time...

but @magicmoodz YES, returning "excessive" buying items DOES certainly count! I've had those moments too. This summer I did some online shopping for some new sandals, sundresses, a top etc. I've been enjoying them all. I live in cool sundresses all summer and what I have in my closet, I've had for at least 5-7 years, still love and wear them all...but it was time for some new looks too. I got some great bargains, good quality too...LOFT, and Walmart, believe it or not! Happy with the purchases.

I did just recently return a wedge/cork sandal I'd bought early in about May at Marshall's...had gotten a better White Mt. pair on Q, more like what I had originally been wanting, and hadn't yet even worn the Marshall's pair. Was iffy about the look and fit from the beginning...finally returned them. Only able to get a credit, since it was past the 60 or 90 day return...already spent on other things I recently needed.

But yes, reassessing purchases, addressing buyer's remorse and "returning excess" certainly counts for decluttering! It's all part of what this "intentional" decluttered living thread is for.

Just did a quick office purge for this morning...had a ton of shipping bags, plastic inserts, mailer bag, small ship box...all items I got this summer I was making sure I'm keeping. I tend to keep the "maybe bags" stashed in between my file cabinet upstairs, and the storage cabinet next to it. Got rid of most. I keep a few good plastic bags inside that storage cabinet for when I empty the shredder.

Much neater, opened up cleared out space, as it should be, and up to date...no "am I keeping these" hanging over my head. All good, all decided, all tossed.

More to do up there on my desk, and finances file (I lay things on top of that as they come in, until time to address or toss them), then I toss/file. Pile has gotten big again...time to assess, file. I hate that file...it's an old "portable" one QVC sold 20 years ago...awkward, not structured, cloth exterior, with cardboard inserts that file folders dig into and can't slide across. It was portable so you could carry it to wherever you are filing, then put away. I never put it away, and I always file where it lives. One day I'll find a better system for just that...I don't want another full furniture type cabinet, just for financials, but some kind of better small one.

Anyway, that's it for now...no time to do further right now...back to it later.

It's A Toss it Tuesday (thanks to the Power of Suggestion)

A beautiful day here with the windows wide open! I spent the morning doing laundry and cooking for the warmer days ahead. And, I planned to spend the afternoon relaxing since company is gone after a busy morning. But, the spirit moved me thanks to the hoarders next door.

Long story, short (maybe)....

The neighbors (tenants) have lived there several years (including pandemic). The 2-car garage was always full of with no room for cars. Amazon, FedEx, and UPS were regular visitors but no boxes were out on recycle days. Okay, maybe they don't recycle at the curb.

However, when a new husband appeared on the scene recently, he totally emptied out just the garage on the driveway. WOW! The next day, 800-GOT-JUNK came and hauled away over 1/2 a truckload of just empty boxes! Oh My!

This was Clue #1 there might be a mountain of goods in the 2000 square foot house. At this point, neighbors are on day 3 of moving out after two 24ft trucks were stuffed Sunday for starters by professional movers. Trucks are still coming and going!

Alas, the Power of Suggestion motivated me to hit my clothes closet again for about an hour of purging! As always, I had a funny moment when I was stuck in blouse for about 30 seconds. I headed for my pair of scissors arms flailing like the robot in Lost in Space...Danger Will Robinson, Danger.

Trash...

2 very old sweaters

6 various color camisoles (all pilly)

Donation...

19 tops (including the Dangerous tight one)

Bags of football team related gloves, scarfs, hats, etc.

Car is loaded with donation items and set for drop off at Goodwill next trip into town.

Keep up the great work fellow purgers!

@magicmoodz - Oh yes, I remember the old ComPact thread very well! I used to be one of those that had drawers full of skin care, makeup, toiletries, etc. I have pared down some and am STILL trying to get to where I only have things I use and love. I haven't full succeeded even yet!

Mail on desk, open, sorted, shredded.

Slips from the past 2 months on desk...checked against accounts and shredded.

Got rid of two more product boxes.

Btw....if it sounds like I've been on a buying spree, not really...these are functional, needed items for the home, or replacing things recently purged. More went out than came in. Even the clothing...is just my normal "updating" for season, and bargains. Again...a lot has gone out in the past few years, needed some updates in the footwear, and summerwear dept.

Desk much neater. Secondary walk-in closet upstairs, some temporary boxes or unopened things dealt with...less clutter in there...though still working on this room.

Tossing an old pair of slip on Sketchers I was using just for exercising indoors, like on my bike...but they are several yrs old, don't feel very supportive anymore, and I got a new slip-on pair this summer, so I really don't need to keep these too. With some foot issues I had this year, I need to keep up to date, and supportive...even if just "indoor workout" sneakers!

That's it for now~Happy Wednesday, all.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

After NUMEROUS warnings and THREATS to my family about the condition of the garage, I succeeded in getting teacher daughter to move her stuff to my parents house, but trucker daughter has done nothing about her stuff and of course my husband cannot physically do anything about his at this point.  So today I am out there making decisions and filling trash bags; 3 bags so far.

If my family would just put broken items and papers in the trash, flatten their boxes, and organize better, we wouldn't have such a mess, but they don't and ultimately we do.  When I've had enough, I've had enough!
