Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

[ Edited ]

@amyb   I have to laugh at the idea of emptying my closets all at once.  We would have to move out as there won't be any room left on the floor or the bed or anywhere to sit as it would all be covered with clothes!  It would take more years than I have to try it all on.

I am  trying things on tho a little at a time.  That is a good rule in moderation as I have purged many things I tried on that I would have kept if I just looked at it.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

I've seen quite a few posts about the quantity of socks we ALL have, lol. I'm certainly no exception. Also, undergarments in excess. I have been trying each day, when I get undressed, to remember to just put into the trash any undergarment or socks that were not comfortable that day. This week I have tossed 1 bra and 2 pairs of socks. It's not a lot and it's not noticeable in the drawer, but it will (hopefully) make a bit of difference. I also have a pair of jeans and a tee shirt that will go into the trash once I complete the painting project (which is taking FOREVER). Every time I plan to paint, I try to wear this same pair of jeans and tee shirt so I don't ruin any more. I got paint on my oldest jeans and the tee has a tiny hole in it. Also tossed a dingy kitchen towel and a moisturizer that smelled "funny".

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

9 boxes for the Vets.  Checked the online schedule, the truck was here the next day.  6 boxes of books from my dads house, and three boxes of towels, sheets, throws.  I wanted to take the books to our library, but just wanted them gone.  I tried to keep the box weights manageable.  P/u hours 8-5, the driver was here at 755, and I was thrilled.  I'll be getting more boxes ready in the coming weeks.

A coworkers son moved to his new place, and he doesn't have a lot.  I asked her if he needed kitchen basics, and he is getting a bunch this week.  Would only share what is in great condition.  My dad used to get a lot of "casino" giveaways, so many new small appliance never out of the boxes.  Packing those up this week.  Just happy someone can use them and not have to buy basics.  Win for both of us.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

In the month since my mother passed, I have indulged in a lot of quiet, reflective  time for myself.  My mind has worked much harder than my body as I've processed feelings and settled things in my mind.  I really needed this down time for myself after walking 13 long hard years with Mom thru her dementia journey.

I feel ready to dive deep into purging projects again and have targeted several things that will get bagged up and in the trash this coming week.  I want to keep releasing more of the mental weight I'm carrying, and lightening the visual weight of what I know is packed in this house will help.

Two Purses:  A charity is scheduled to come Tuesday so I put everything I had accumulated for them lately in a large bag.  I decided that I needed to go through my purses again and found 2 from a brand called Lemon Hill.  Does anyone remember that brand (flowery cloth bags) that was sold many, many years ago on QVC?

One was a satchel - the print was cute in denim blues, but I don't know why I purchased it as I never carry a satchel.  The other purse still has the tags on it - it's way too small for me and the print too loud.  Another purchase that I'm not sure why I made it.

Oh well, it'll be good to see the stuff that I've been gathering lately for charity be picked up and gone.

@RedTop

So sorry to hear of the passing of your mom.   I just wanted to offer you hugs and my prayers.

@RedTop  I hope you are finding a place of peace. My mom needed my help the last couple of years of her life, and while I did all I could, at times it was exhausting.  Give yourself credit for how long you were able to step up and help your mom when she needed it.  I hope the clean out process will go smoothly for you and your siblings.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

@Snicks1  In a weird way I'm glad to hear how many of us have a sock problem!  Smiley Very Happy

And I painted our whole house about ten years ago!  I taped a paint brush to a long pole and balanced at the top of the ladder to paint the vaulted parts of the ceiling.  Kind of crazy, and I couldn't do it now.  Good luck on finishing your paint project.  It's not easy, but so nice when it's done!

My decluttering this weekend is a little different.  With the help of DH, (mostly him) we decluttered ten of the touchiest smoke alarms that have terrorized me for decades.  All ten in the trash now.  We changed them out for a new type that's not hardwired throughout the house.  One going off is plenty loud enough to warn of any danger.

Small Sunday purge..

Went through my summer bags Periea box...not too many, just various for different occasions...ie. straw clutch to go out with, everyday Lug crossbodies, one beach bag, a woven tote style purse.

Pulled out one small Joy Susan crossbody to consign. I never use it, because it's too thin/small to hold my current cell phone with cover & pop-it. Like new-used about twice. I guess it was always just too small.

Found an inside insert, QVC used to sell for organizing totes, inside a summer tote/purse. Tossed various old items from that...old travel size contact solution, individual disinfectant wipes, dead pen etc.

I have a closet hanger w/ several hooks, for scarves/bags, where I hang the current bags being used...rearranged that for upcoming spring season. Tossed one Lug headband.

Tossed an old summer beachy body oil spray I have two of...the older of the two & was almost used up.

That was it for this past weekend.

@BunSnoop I totally remember Lemon Hill! It was QVC's branded "Vera Bradley" dupe before they represented VB. Once VB came on, out went LH. Truth told, I loved LH better. My favorite summer tote/wallet set was a LH I loved and used to death. Was so sorry when I had to let it go as it was just too faded. Loved the color, turquoise/lime green/yellow, the shape & functionality of that tote. Still have the matching wallet, in case I ever want a lightweight wallet, but haven't used it lately, as I'm not, currently, using regular, large wallets. So many of my crossbodies have internal wallets, card slots etc, I don't need them. But I still own several nice ones I don't get rid of, just in case I want a wallet again.

Also had a lunchbag from LH, but left it in an old job's fridge after I left there.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

@RedTop Sounds so familiar to me. Great that you are giving yourself the "internal time" that is needed now. You had a very long journey with your mom...13 years, I think, is not the norm. You need mental and physical rest.

All that clearing of the emotional, mental clutter, will lead you, naturally, into clearing physical clutter when you are ready. Sending you good thoughts. ❤️‍🩹💛
