Re: Declutter 2022: What have you purged today?

Happy day after Christmas everyone!

I added a full size body pillow to my donate pile that my son wanted a couple years back and never really used.

I'm hoping to go thru both of my kids' rooms later on this week while we're all off and organzize them a bit, make room for their new stuff and maybe declutter a tiny bit of the old stuff. That's the only downside to Christmas gifts, figuring out where to neatly put it all!

I hope that everyone has a great day.

@rnmom

Can you believe another year of "decluttering" which I haven't been great at has passed.

My friend is a expert at selling on various sites (and decluttering) she is coming in January and I can't wait to finally rid boxes of unused excess stuff and hopefully make a few $$$$s.

Thank you for starting this thread & I hope 2023 is a great year for you & "me" to finally get my clutter under control.

PS: I did donate a lot of holiday decor went from 5 containers to 3 and more to do.  Unfortunately our donation center wasn't accepting anymore holiday decor by 12/15.

My girlfriend told me to put everything in my LR I haven't used in a year...I'd never be able to walk in there😳😳😳🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️haha

Things would be piled to the ceiling if I honestly did that...oh the countless $$$ ...and think of the space I'd have in my house!!!

Re: Declutter 2022: What have you purged today?

I know it's a little early, but I tossed my 2022 wall calendar (yes, I still use one), and a lipgloss.

I had a little bit of time yesterday morning so I went thru my younger son's closet with him. We tossed an old trapper keeper from school and a plastic hanger. Also an empty box and 10 old cans of playdough. He's 14 and hasn't used playdough in years but it just kept hanging out in there.

Added to donate: a pair of sandals, baseball cleats and batting gloves that are all too small for him.

We also relocated a few items and took them to our basement storage room. It's not a lot but it looks neater too.

I still want to go thru the rest of his room and my older son's room too, but I think that might be too ambitious. Especially since my older son is hardly ever home and I won't do it without him.

@homedecor1, I did just that. I pulled a lot of things out of hiding so I can finally once and for all deal with it. It was the biggest mistake I made. Sure I dealt with a lot and got it out, but then, there is still a lot that I get to look at everyday.  It has been too long now. It is overwhelming because everything is in my way. I just havent had the motivation because work has been so busy.  Unless you are ready to deal with it all, I would say pull it out slowly. If your friend is coming over to help you, that is a different story.  I hope you have much success. The space you gain will be amazing.

I am not a minimalist and probably never will be, but it sure sounds good about now.

Re: Declutter 2022: What have you purged today?

[ Edited ]

Hi ladies...happy lull after the holidays! Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday.

Well, I got sick, day before Christmas Eve!... and spent the holiday home on the couch. Oh well. I go for a Covid PCR test this afternoon. I passed an at home one on Saturday, but it was on the first day of symptoms so they advise you do one at least 3 days later, to be more accurate.

So today.....I SO feel like decluttering and refreshing for the New Year...happens like "nature" to me each year. Not that I'm ready to take down all of Christmas yet...I'm just not that girl who likes it ALL DOWN by New Years, lol. Especially this year because I only put up my full sized tree the week before. So I'll take down all the extra chotchkas but leave the two trees for a bit.

Anyway, spirit is willing to declutter, but energy is not...but I'm noodling things in my wardrobe that may go as I sit here online shopping a few sales. Lol. One in, one out.

Threw out an old ratty Motto sweater, and a cute waffle knit top from Amazon that just didn't last, not even a year old looked like a rag. I'm getting tired of "fast fashion." But seems there's no in between these days...it's either cheap & cheerful clothing or way over the top expensive "real" fashion. Sigh. I still like some Amazon "fashion", but this was not worth it...started pilling after a few wearings; I should have returned it then.

Also, tossed an old kitchen towel/potholder; I got a set of 3 of on Q/Rachel Ray, years ago. I've put out the fresh one.

I think I need to assess my old fashioned short, J Crew style cardis from about 2011, that seem too preppy, thin, and out of date now. Different styles are much more stylish and in now.

I used to think, keep one in black, white, and navy as they are classics and never go out. But....I have not worn them in years. And, yes...lol...they CAN go out! I think I'm letting those go when I do the wardrobe reassess.

I don't know....there's lots of old ratty things need replacing in pjs, and stuff. I just haven't found good replacements, but time to go anyway.

Thing is lately....things aren't made as nice as my old stuff was, so I held onto those. But it's time.

Ok...just popped on to add a few things.

Have a good day, good week everyone... Smiley Happy

Re: Declutter 2022: What have you purged today?

A quick pre-New Years purge of my cosmetics stash. Filled a shoebox of brand new makeup items and shower gels that I will never use. Donated to the thrift that I know sells beauty items.

Plenty of purging coming starting next month!

@aprilskies @homedecor1 - I was just listening to a video from Dana K White from A Slob Comes Clean and she talks about how that is what a lot of people recommend when decluttering a space. Pull everything out so that you can "see what you have" but she talks about how that never worked for her because she'd get sidetracked, run out of time, get overwhelmed, and like you said, she'd end up with an even bigger mess than she started with.

She talks about how she learned to just deal with literally one object at a time and decide what to do with that one thing.  Either toss, donate or put it away and she actually stops and puts it away right then. So that way if something comes up and she can't finish for whatever reason she doesn't have a bigger mess than she started with.

Even if she only takes care of 3 things, it's still 3 things, and the space is better with those 3 things gone rather than a whole kitchen dining room filled with "stuff" that she has to deal with later.

I really enjoy listening to her you tube videos and I recommend them if you guys are interested in that sort of thing and get a chance. Practical, common sense ideas. She has a couple of books too, but I haven't read any of them.

Re: Declutter 2022: What have you purged today?

I tossed a scrap of a container of silver jewelry cleaner, I already bought a replacement, son tossed a broken hairbrush.

From the kitchen tossed a dishrag, phone book, coupons, and a cookbook that the binding was so broken hubby was holding it together with a rubber band. I actually got him a  new hardcover version of it for Christmas.

Added to donate: a pair of shoes, 3 more cookbooks, 4 plastic kitchen utensils.

I'm trying to get a few spaces organized because starting next week time will be limited and Im afraid I'm not going to do much.

But I will be checking in and definitely reading about all the progress everyone is making!
