Dead mouse on concrete under carport???

Went out yesterday to get in my car out in the carport only to find a dead mouse lying on the concrete out there. I had this happen to me once last year as well. I can't figure out how this happens. If a stray cat killed it, why didn't they eat it? Both times, the mice were totally intact. I am not liking this at all. Would anyone have any other explanation as to why I'm finding dead mice? By the way, in case any of you might think that a cat is bringing me a "gift," I have absolutely nothing to do with any of the stray cats around here.

Cats are HUNTERS.......they do not always eat their dead prey

@qualityshopper

It's been my experience that cats don't eat mice very often.  They like to give them as "gifts".

Seems like you might have a secret admirer that's trying to win you over .... LOL.

Dead mouse could also have been dropped by a bird of prey.

I have hawks and crows in my neighborhood, and I have seen a crow swoop down and grab a lizard off my back wall...

Re: Dead mouse on concrete under carport???

There could be several reasons you're finding dead mice.

Mice get sick out in the wild just like any other animal.  And they don't have a long life span.  It's possible that they know they're dying and looking for a safe place to hide to do so in peace.  It could be just the natural cycle and have nothing to do with you.

Or, if you have neighbors someone may be poisoning them and they're coming to your carport to pass on.

And as others have said, cats don't always eat mice.  They like to bring them to a place that they can control the mouse's movement and "play" with them until the mouse just dies.  Then the cat is no longer interested and will leave it.

Or it's also possible you have somewhere near your house that is attractive to them where they've "set up shop", so to speak.

My neighbor has cats that don't eat what they catch.

You can't prevent what is perfectly natural for animals from happening in your carport. Use a shovel to put it in a bag and put it in your trash can. This isn't worth a second thought.

A big bird dropped it (owl or hawk), it died of old age or disease, it was poisioned.

Why is this so concerning?  There are thousands out there LIVE that you never see.

could you possibly have mice in your home that you are not aware of? mice can easily get through the tiniest holes and crevices.

another explanation if you have neighbors......they may have the blocks of poison that the mice eat that affects their nervous systems. they dont die instantly so they can move around and end up in a different area to die.

Could have been left by an outside cat.  They often are in it just for the chase, not the meal.

But it might be a hint to do a spring perimeter check.  Mice travel in herds.
