College bedding question...first child heading out soon :)

Hi everyone,

I need advice and know I can get it here. My son is going to college soon and his university said to buy twin XL bedding. I can find the sheets, but the comforters in that size are really cheap and scratchy. Do you think I can use a regular twin comforter with the longer sheets or will the comforter be too small? Any advice about bedding and frankly anything else that would be useful would be most appreciated!! This is a new experience for me and college is so different then back in the day when I went. Thanks so much!
