This is kind of of an extension to my former post about cleaning. What is your opinion about the best use of closet space? Does it take less space to fold all the shirts and tops and stack them on shelves in a closet or is hanging them up still the best solution? I don't have a lot of closet space. I'd really like to know what you think.

Re: Closet organizing question

I put sweaters and jeans in drawers. I hang my shirts and jackets together, and dresses behind them. I put fall and winter clothes and shoes in boxes under my bed during spring and summer, and vice versa. I have very little closet space..two small closets in my bedroom. There are also hangers that hold 5 or 6 shirts...I don't like them, but they save space. It is also really important to declutter your clothes every year. give away or sell what you haven't worn for a year, unless it is a dressy outfit or knew for special occasions. It is really hard to get rid of unworn or rarely worn clothes, but if you made a shopping mistake, just get rid of it. Again, I can't recommend FLYLADY.COM too much. She will change your life.

Re: Closet organizing question

For the clothes that do stay in your closet, I would suggest buying Huggable Hangers. You'll be able to fit more and things will look streamlined.

Re: Closet organizing question

I have huggable hangers. I love them. I was just thinking about the use of the vertical space in my closet that's kind of wasted. I thought if maybe I put a tall shelf unit in part of the closet I could fold all the shirts and tops and put them on there - jeans and that sort of thing too and then I would be able to use put more things in my closet.

Re: Closet organizing question

You may have already done this but before you organize anything in your closet go through it and clear out all of the items that you haven't worn/used in the last 6 mos to a year. If you have a nice resale shop in your area try and sell some items to make a little money back. Otherwise donate the clothes to a worthy organization/thrift shop.

If you want to use vertical space get some of those tall metal separators that hook onto the shelf (container store online has them as do other sources). That way you can fold sweaters and similar items and stack them which for me is better than putting them in a drawer. When stacked like that, they stay together plus with just a glance I can see what I have.

For purses, I use a vertical purse hanger that hangs in the corner of the closet (often an unused area). They hold several purses in the one vertical space. There are different types of those.

I recently organized my closet and it looks so good when I open the door expecially since there is nothing at all sitting on the floor and everything in there is something that I actually use.

Re: Closet organizing question

The picture below is the type of hanging shelf I have in my closet. I use them to hold folded tee shirts, jeans, etc. I like them because I can take them with me when I move rather than having built-ins. Just be sure to buy the ones that have the fabric that velcros over the bar rather than the type with two or three hanger heads. The latter type doesn't really hold up well and doesn't handle much weight.

Re: Closet organizing question

I have small closets and got the Huggable Hangars which I love as well. I also have six of the Origami shelves with casters that are sold on HSN. I bought one after watching the presentation off and on for a couple of years and thinking about it.

I liked the one so well and found it was exactly as represented and then saw how handy they were so I ordered five more. I have two of the larger ones with four shelves and the rest have three shelves and are the size of a small bookcase.

I use one of the smaller ones inside my closet and have shoes in their boxes on it. I have another one with purses and folded pants and sweaters. It is great because it is so portable and easy to pull out if I want to vacuum or rearrange the shoes, etc.

Then I put one in my bathroom and use if for storing my towels and other items that formerly were in a small hall closet such as toilet paper and decorative soaps.

I've saved a huge amount of drawer space using this method to hang sweaters..... http://snapguide.com/guides/hang-a-sweater/?utm_expid=56347960-1

Re: Closet organizing question

I have underwear , nightgowns , t shirts , pedal pushers and shorts, and swimming apparell in my dresser, My few sweaters are in a bin on the shelf of my closet as I don't use them much in florida. Everything else is hanging up. I have a walk in closet and have organied it so that I have a section of jackets , one of other cool weather clothing. then blouses, then dresses then skirts then pants and finally robes and caftans etc.2 piece skirt and top sets are hung with dresses.I don't have a ton of clothing so there is still room in there and I put up shelves to use as a linen closet because I don't have a linen closet in this house.I know some people like to organize by color as well. This is just how i have mine and I find it very convenient. I have very high ceilings so I had my DH install 2 additional shelves above the one that came in the house. I have one just for purses and luggage and other travel needs and the other one has a hodge podge - but everything is in a plastic bin and labeled so I know what is in them before I get the ladder and climb up there.

Re: Closet organizing question

I swear by Huggable hangers (the real one of Joy's). I have many, many of them. I've even sent them to people here to try out.

I've given them as gifts to everyone. My house is a mess, but all of my closets look great.

I also suggest the hooks that comes with them. I think they are called "Cascading hooks".

They allow you to hang one thing after another and so on. It saves space. I also put together several outfits so if I want to go out in a hurry, I just grab one of the outfits.
