I bought the bar cart from Target that I had read so much about....had to, as our store had it half price! Not using it as a bar cart, but more of a side table in our living room. The gold finish on it is very pretty, but part of me wonders if I would like it more in our space if it was more of an oil rubbed bronze like some of the other hardware we have in there. I am fine if some of the gold shows through, though, as I like that, too. Soooooo any ideas how to change the color of the gold metal, other than spray painting it? Can I wipe a stain on it or will it just wipe off? Or maybe I should just be happy with the gold as it does not truly fight with anything.

I don't know if stain would absorb.
You can dab on or sponge on a darker acrylic paint. It would give it an antiqued effect if some of the gold shows through. I've done that on metal before.

I changed out the finish on the towel bar on my bathroom cabinet. I did acrylic paint in a few tones and then I clear coated it to protect it from the daily wear and tear.

Acrylic paint....both of you mentioned it. Is this the little bottles from craft stores?
What did you use to dab it on?
These sound like ideas I can do and what I had in mind!
Thanks!

Yes, I used the little bottles of acrylic paint from the craft store.
You can use a copper and a dark brown - whatever you like. I always use those little sponge brushes.

Love it! And an antique finish would be awesome! We have a craft store downtown. And I have a sponge brush downstairs! Ah, life is good!

Update.....our son stopped over for a second today and I showed him the cart and asked him if he liked it where it was. I soooo value his artistic eye and design talent. I was thrilled when it got a thumbs up, so I asked about painting it, as I had not got around to it like I had planned on doing. He liked that idea, but suggested spray paint instead. Hmmmm....ok. But get this.....he jumps in the car, goes to WalMart and buys an oil rubbed bronze paint, took the cart to the garage and had it painted in no time. I just brought it back in and put the two wooden pieces where they go and MAGIC! Perfection! Just what I wanted and even better. Ahhhhh............
