We purchased one for a bedroom last year, it was about $150.00. We didn't think it was overpriced.
There is no central air in our house, it helps keep the room cool.

I'm actually looking for a small simple contemporary fan without a light for a guest room/office. Most seem to have lights in them. I suppose I can just skip using the light if I'm in there and don't want to use it.
I'm looking at one that is 42-44" in size. Most I have found online have been in the $150.00-$300.00 price range which I think is reasonable. I found a Hunter fan that I am considering with light and remote (I don't care for the strings that hang down) for $150.00 on Wayfair.
Of course some brands will be more. We have two Casablanca fans that are older but still run very smoothly and cost $500.00 each many years ago. I'm not even sure if they still make them but they still look nice and (knock on wood) we have have no problems with them.
ETA: We have fans in all of the bedrooms and I just can't sleep (even in winter) without having the air circulating. I love the fan over my bed.
I want to replace the cheap and dated looking fan that is in the spare bedroom that I'm going to have painted next month.

We are fan people! We have fans in every room. When we watch renovation shows and they remodel and take out the ceiling to put just a ceiling light we are screaming at the tv screen! Unfathomable!

I replaced 3 in bedrooms a couple of years ago and one last year. Changed the gold/brass ones from the 90' to white, more modern ones. The first three I got from build.com and the last one from Lowes. The first 3 where about $150 and the last one, a little smaller, was one sale for $120. I haven't priced them lately. Maybe wait till Memorial weekend for sale?

@ImaoldhippieYes, we recently looked at some fandeliers. Some prices were high (if you need the thing to be one step short of taking off for outer space), but there were many options in the marketplace that were quite reasonable (imo) -- even from the big box stores. Perhaps the size you're searching for is not as popular? Or maybe you need features that are increasing the price...?
Thankfully, I won this debate in our home recently, and our last two ceiling fans are leaving our home in one week! While I understand those who like circulating air while sleeping, I can't stand the ceiling fan over the bed. Feels foreboding and heavy to me. The breeze from a fan does help cool your skin in summer, though.

Id2 .we were watching traditional spaces show and they took out ceiling fans and just put up a light and my wife and I both said why would they take out a ceiling fan.they have it there for a reason. We would not be happy. We are looking at ceiling fans now actually .I changed bulbs and had the metal part of the bulb break inside and trying to get it out ruined the light. I hate the fans we have only because we have high ceilings and to change a bulb they have a globe on them that you have to unscrew 2 different things to change the bulb so we are going to get fans with lights that don't have covered bulbs. We never gave that a thought until we had to change bulbs.on Amazon there is a wide range of prices so good luck getting new fans.

I have bought three ceiling fans in the past year...all have lights but they are not bright; just one uplight in the center. They are Hunter brand and I got them at Costco. I think they will have one of them on sale in a few days. I paid $119 each for two of them and $129 for the other one. I think those are good prices from what I have seen other places.
