Anyone ever have a Home Depot or Ikea closet done?

A friend told me today that Home Depot lays out the design and has pre-fab pieces to install in a closet.

Ikea has organizers but I'm thinking I'll pass but who knows maybe they're good.

California Closets are so high in price I won't go that route.  Maybe a local carpenter but my friend said Home Depot would probably be the best.

Any ideas and / or experiece in re-doing a closet?

I'm so glad you posted this.  I have been wondering how Home Depot's service was.   I'm looking forward to any responses too.

Re: Anyone ever have a Home Depot or Ikea closet done?

I have California closets in my bedroom walk-in.  I have had them for about 20 years.  I love it.

I would like to customize my foyer coat closet.  It is a nice size, but unorganized and crowded.  There is so much unused space above the top shelf and ceiling.  I have things in boxes, but can't get to them easily or find anything.

I plan on buying the system probably from Home Depot and installing it ourselves.  It is easy.  My husband has removed the California closet system from the bedroom to paint the closet twice and it was pretty easy to reinstall.

I would think any handy person could design and install themselves.

Just measure and buy what you need to fit the space.  It is easy to put together.  You can even purchase a whole system already designed to fit your space.

I think it is a good idea to do it yourself at a good price.

@rockygems123 I would go with Home Depot or Lowes.  We had Lowes install a new screen door on our townhouse.  They hire area contractors to go out and do work for them so they are licensed and insured.  As far as my closet DH did a whole room for me in my basement.  It was easy enough, just measured the walls for shelving and bought what we needed.  He could have put in the screen door too but it was so reasonable to have them do it, we figured why not?   I thought the price for the "California" closet was crazy!  I'm happy with mine.

@rockygems123

am sure the sales clerks have various computer generated designs to help  and the customer gives the exact measurements . As with any service the quality of work by the contractor is what  makes the difference .

I had my husband buy all the  metal racks ect and hardware from Home Depot to convert a small  spare bedroom into a big  walk in closet . The price for the necessary hardware  has increased but DIY  is very cost efficient .

I love my IKEA kitchen.  I would use IKEA for my closets too in the future.  There are many options and seemily endless configurations to fit your situation.

Whatever you decide to do, though, you will probably be happy with the end result. A tidy closet lifts my spirits.

Years ago, we had Ikea design and install an entire floor worth of offices including "open" space, kitchen, and storage closets. They did an excellent job and made it fairly painless.

I would use them again.

@Carmie   I would like to redo our coat closet too.

When you say do it yourself are you speaking about California closets?  TIA

No, I do love my California closet system, but they are now way more expensive than they ever were.  I have had mine for over 25 years and it wasn't cheap then.

This time, I would like to buy a system from Home Depot or Amazon and install it ourselves.  From looking at them in the store, some look like good quality.

I would want a tower of drawers and shelves in the middle, then hanging bars for long and short coats on either side.

I know we would have to attach the tower to the wall, then extend the hanging bars from the tower to the wall.  Pretty easy for two people.

I just have to decide which one I want and wait for it to be in stock,  they seem to sell out fast.

I like the one I am posting.  You can store items pretty close to the ceiling.  Right now that area is wasted space in my closet.

Another option is the Elfa System from Container Stores. My sister-in-law's husband installed a system in their master bedroom and it appears attractive and functional.

We were very lucky to buy a condo where all closets are outfitted with California Closets--even my itty bitty laundry room.

We have a double door closet in the foyer and I cannot believe what we have in there. If someone asked me what my favorite feature in my home is, I might just say my California Closets (maybe because I thrive on organization with a place for everything and everything in its place).
