Why do people chop that V in the top of throw pillows?

They probably saw a magazine layout where a designer did it and think that makes it chic. It isn't. At least not to me. I also don't get the draw of placing a throw pillow on the diagonal, sitting on a single one of its corners.

Taking your hand and chopping a decorative pillow actually started in the late 80's. It's been around for a long time.

I con't care for it and don't do it to mine either. . . and I have a dozen pillows on our chaise.

I've always thought that was a silly thing to do and never have done it to any of my pillows.

I do a slight chop on soft bigger pillows because I like the look but not the extreme one in the photo.  They did it on all the HGTV shows but i haven't paid attention lately.

It's suppose to make it look comfortable or inviting.

Like someone had been lounging about on it.

Also adds visual texture to a room.

I hate throw pillows. None at my house.

Because they can?  Breaks up a line of pillows for a slightly casual look.

Re: Can someone explain please

I think it became a way of 'fluffing' a pillow toward the middle, where they sometimes get flat.  Kept them from lookig "tired".

As the single-chopped pillow has now been losing favor, with some saying it's too contrived-looking, it's been succeeded by the "double-chop".   That's done by chopping the top as usual, but then also chopping in at the sides of the pillow gently, using both hands either side.

It gives a more natural, more uniformly plump look!

The trends endlessly come and go, even with throw pillows....
