Batteries - Not all are equal

We use more and more batteries every year (candles, toys) and I just assumed there was a difference in quality/depending on what you purchased. I read on this site a poster complained about her battery Valerie product didn't last as long as stated...

and I've had people in stores seeing me holding brand named batteries at the checkout counter say.....those are much cheaper at dollar store. So I decided to research it - what a wonderful engineering report I found via Google. To say the cheaper batteries were half the power - would be about right. (China anyone?)
