Re: BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE QUICKIE

[ Edited ]

Taking another look... It goes without saying the bones of the room are good. What's not to like about the high ceilings, fireplace and moldings. I'd keep the rug, the small settee (though I'd choose another fabric), the art above it and possibly the lamp. Original or not, I don't care for the ceiling fixture. The rest of the furniture is pretty dreadful. Frankly, it all looks like it was obtained at a garage sale.

Small world ....

My grandfather lived at 1345 Greene Avenue - according to the 1900 census.

They later moved to Flatbush .... then out to Queens.

That's wild.  The brownstone in Brooklyn was owned by my grandmother's father.  My grandparents lived on Long Island when they first married and then in Rosedale for years and then when they fully retired, they moved back  into the brownstone in Brooklyn.

I can't remember the house number.  I am sure it's written down somewhere.  When my aunt sold the brownstone in 2010ish it wasn't worth nearly what it is worth now.

Just one room, but this Brooklyn parlor by my faves, the mother -daughter design team "McGrath II", struck me.  There are so many design tips in this one image.

Don't you think the ceiling light fixture and the fireplace are original to the brownstone?  And maybe that fixture was once gaslit--  how fab!

Love the crown molding, the unexpected pale blue walls.  But then McGrath throws in that deep aubergine lamp against the blue, lovely.  And both pieces of art are in muted earth tones, which makes them stand out against that ethereal blue.  They wouldn't be my choice in art, necessarily, but the colors work interestingly in context.

The table on one side of the fireplace balances the antique, exquisite settee on the other, providing a rough, not "matchy", symmetry.  The classic comfy tufted chesterfield, contrasts nicely with the modern-esque armchairs. Love the colorful pillows in the corner too.  The ultra convenient nesting coffee tables, can be pulled out, or stowed at will.

Always love a glowing, jewel-hued oriental rug with light walls.  Notice that they saw fit to "under-dress" the mantel, with just one vessel of blossoms.  The clean-lined, over-mantel mirror shows one of the brownstone's gorgeous wooden doors in reflection.

McGrath does "traditional" so well, but often with a 'clean' and fresh perspective, in my opinion.

I like that pull-out coffee table. At least that's what I think it is?

Re: BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE QUICKIE

@Oznell   I like this room for several reasons.  I think my biggest reason is it looks like it wasn't all thought out at once.  It's like someone waited for just the right thing to come along and only things they really liked.  Not necessarily matchy matchy or "in style".  I like that!

Re: BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE QUICKIE

The crown molding is beautiful and I'm not normally a fan of blue for the living room but I do like this shade for some reason.  The rest of it would be a total redo.

@jubilant,  well put!  My sentiments exactly.  I find that McGrath team so artful, and unique, in the knowing way that they bring beautiful elements together.
