I have exactly as you describe and I've never had them match.   If you pick up the same colors and obviously, patterns that work together, they will look wonderful and imo, much better than two matching rugs.

I have an open floor plan, and have no rugs at all in this house.   I grew up in a house with rugs everywhere, but am not a fan of them in my house.

Re: Area Rugs-Question

[ Edited ]

For me, I don't think they'd have to match, but they would need to complement, featuring like colors and similar patterns. Matching rugs in different sizes would also be fine and probably most easy.

No - not match, but coordinate.

My dining room, "library" and living room are one large "L" shaped area.

I have a fire engine red area rug in living room, a b/w what looks like zebra skins on gray slate pavers in dinng room, and a black/gray sort of gray clouds against a black background lightly textured rug in "library."
