Would you feel that if your kitchen and living area are open to each other you that you need to have area rugs that match in both areas?

Different colors probably would not look right.

What about similar color with different designs?

Any suggestions would be appreciated  Smiley Happy

I don't think matchey-matchey is necessary but coordinating colors/patterns would be fine.  I love area rugs, I just have trouble making them 'stay put'...I have one long runner at my entryway from the garage into the  family room...it 'walks' and yes I do have a pad under it but it did not keep it in place.

@CherryHugs

I'm sure it's a matter of personal taste and decorating.

I would prefer one pattern at the one area, and a complementary color (w/ no or little pattern) at the other end.

Different colors would work if you treat your rooms as being entirely different, even though they are open to each other. Apparently, this is your case. I just wouldn't use 2 different patterns. But I suppose the character and size of each room might also be a factor.

In my case, I have a long living room. On the music side, I have a patterned wool rug. The sitting area side (at the moment) has no rug, but I am looking for an entirely different color, but which also coordinates, in a solid color choice.

Re: Area Rugs-Question

[ Edited ]

We don’t have area rugs. We just have tile. Area rugs are to much work with 6 cats and they constantly move. But if I did do rugs I would not be matchy matchy.

Even though the rooms are open I feel you can have different rugs as they are technically different rooms.   I like simple patterns and attempt to try to match the furniture they are with so the colors flow nicely.

I think either approach (match or not) can work.  Much depends on the other elements in the room.

I've done design work for years, and what I've learned is, don't be afraid to try new things and learn to see beyond what you think.  It's remarkably complex (even simplicity) and beautiful.

I generally find a "reason" for my own home designs and on the whole, it works for me.  A good design sings to me and I hear it.

Have fun.  I love area rugs.  If I had the budget I'd have an entire "library" of them.

Re: Area Rugs-Question

I agree with above posts. Put a pattern in one space then a solid complimentary one in the other space. I wouldn’t want matcha. We have a navy blue one with a design in the great room. If we get one for the nook  it will be a solid blue  or even a gray.

I tend to not like matchy matchy.

There are many rugs that look good together.  As long as there are some elements that tie the two rugs together, they should work.

I have my family room and dining room in the same area and have two different area rugs. They are both in the same color family (blue) but have different patterns and different shades of the same color. Both have the same secondary color (beige). My formal living room is sepate but also have a similar color pallete.

I have a semi open floor plan in my home so I've been there with the rug question. I didn't do the exact rug but I did a complimenting rug. I've also did the same rug but in a dffernent color in the other part of the house. It really has a nice flow to the look.
