Anyone else not impressed with decor available for the "lesser" holidays?

I like to decorate for fall, and for Christmas. I have lots of things I love, and many are practical and used, as well as serve the function of decor. There is always a lot of high quality, high end looking items to choose from.

The rest of the holidays, Valentines, Easter, St. Paddy's, I just can't get into. The standard decor offered is just tacky looking to me. If there are nice ideas out there, whitelinen will find and post them for us. I only have a couple of pieces for Easter, and find I have to use things that aren't really Easter, but more spring, to get a more sophisticated look. I do nothing for the other holidays.

I do some Americana decor for the summer months, and there is plenty of that available in a more high end look, and it can stay out for months, making it a better deal, and easier process for me.

Anyone else just not impressed with the offerings?

Christmas holiday decorating, as well as Fall decorating, can easily extend into a couple months each. The other holidays are pretty much just a few days.

I'm with you, mominohio... I do fall and Christmas, otherwise I change out pillows, throws and some of the decorative objects for other more seasonal colors and style, but no kitschy holiday stuff for me. Each to their own, but to me, a lot of the stuff just looks junky. Oh, I sometimes do set out a few bunnies for a few days near Easter.

It is a challenge to find nicer holiday decor for the other holidays. It depends on your style, but I like to decorate with vintage or vintage-inspired things. Just some ideas: I collect transfer ware dishes, and use the appropriate colors for the season. Purple comes out for Easter, Green for St. Patrick's Day, red for Valentine's Day. My Belleek dishes are used for the spring, from St. Patrick's Day through Easter. Most of my Belleek came from QVC, but I have been lucky to find few pieces here and there at second hand and consignment shops. I add in things like vintage books, tea cups and candles to go with my colors. Vintage greeting cards or old post cards for the season fill in little spots. Walnut Ridge chalk ware figures are nice. I put out old looking bunnies for the spring. Michaels has some nice bird cages that I am using for floral arrangements with little bird nests. I have found nice things from Victoria Trading Company, if you like the vintage look.

I don't do much decorating for the "lesser" holidays, so I'm not much concerned with what's out in the marketplace. I tend to go with a basket of colored eggs or a pot of fresh flowers for Easter. I have a nice pottery pumpkin I pull out every Halloween; he looks great on the table with sprigs of autumn leaves and pinecones from the yard. I'm not a big seasonal décor shopper.

I don't do much for the smaller special days either such as Valentines Day or St. Patricks Day. Why spend the money, it's one day. I still have my Christmas wreath hanging on my front door just like my neighbors do. Shame on me. The next wreath will be for Spring/Easter. I do have a few cute things for July 4th, we have a pool and usually have a big bbq. Then after that, I do put out things for Fall. Those colors go very well with the color scheme in my house. Right now I am just wishing all this snow will go away.

I know what you mean. I usually decorate for the season rather than the holiday. I have different china, candles and glasses that coordinate and I just change things around that way.

Re: Anyone else not impressed with decor available for the ""lesser"" holidays?

I like changing things out for spring/summer from my cold weather decor, but I do very little for the individual holidays because they seem sort of like a one-day wonder. I think setting the table for the celebration is a great way to decorate for a holiday and Hetty's ideas are a perfect way to do that.

I do have a bit of decor for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, patriotic days and Halloween that I add to whatever wreath is hanging on the front door, but they are things like a heart, a shamrock, etc. and all fit into one small box, so not much money spent or storage used for them.
