I have bought items from the same groupings before. If not, I just try to match the faucets. If brushed nickel, that's what I buy for the accessories . If gold toned, I'd buy those. Other than that, I'd stick to the same color for all, if you choose plastic or ceramic. Today, tho, do what makes you happy! No more rules!

You should do whatever YOUR eye tells you. Do you like things that are clean, simple, architectural, minimal? Keep accessories to a minimum. Do you like colors? Are you into serene monochromatic color schemes or more energetic, high-contrast ones? Do you like pattern? Or not? Does your eye gravitate to eclectic, personal mixes of unique hand-picked accessories? (That's me!) Or do you just love the look of new matched accessories often found in some retail stores? All that matters is that you love it. Really!

I'm doing a bathroom remodel right now. (Actually it has been going on forever but I digress) I'm not doing matchy-matchy but we decided that we were going with brushed nickel so that is what everything is. Showerhead, faucets on sinks, lighting, shower curtain rod, etc. My wastebasket is a Longaberger basket and I more than likely will just keep that.

When we moved I needed to get a housekeeper for health reasons. I had not as yet decorated the bathroom so the second or third time she came she brought me 2 trays for on the vanity counter and said they were a gift from her to put our stuff on - a his & a hers. This makes it tremendously easier for her to clean the counter.Anyway they were seashell scene plastic trays and they sort of set the tone for the bathroom decor. I ended up going to Bells outlet where she bought the trays and got the matching glass, soap dishes and waste can. i even bought some towels & rugs that were in a matching color. She was thrilled , i like it OK so it has been that way for 6 years now. Honestly , we are the only ones who ever see our master bath so it's a kind of who cares situation. The guest bath I have decorated in a Pittsburgh theme - a Pittsburgh sports teams shower curtain and terrible towel hand towels and lots of photos of the burgh. I even found a black & yellow waste can I paid too much for but i like it anyway.DH put Steeler and Pirates decals on it.I have a yellow rubber ducky in the shower that has a Pens insigna on him, and I just bought a little rubber penguin in gold & black to take home for in there. I need to find a black or yellow rug as I now have a white one in there.

I have no clue what color the finishes will be. I don't even know what color cabinets or vanity. We for sure are doing a white and gray kitchen but don't know if we will put white cabinets in the bathrooms with white and gray counters like the kitchen. I was thinking of doing it the same theme as my room in Safari. But I also have found some pretty accesories. I guess it will come down to what color the cabinets and vanity told will be.
I haven't picked out my vanity yet either but the shower walls have been tiled and I have the paint color picked out for the walls. I knew I wanted brushed nickel so everything I bought had to match that. I worked backwords. LOL

I do not get everything to match. That being said, my bathrooms have Peterboro basket waste baskets and tissue covers that match. My soap dispensers and toothbrush holders are Longaberger, solid colors, in colors to coordinate with each room.
My bathrooms are very very small, so I put as little in them as possible. There is virtually no counter space, so we don't leave out any kind of products, everything is put away in the cabinet under each sink or in the medicine cabinet. The back of the toilet tanks hold the tissue boxes and a flameless candle, and there is some wall decor, but that is all, no trays or baskets or shelves or any other kind of things to hold items, as there would be nowhere (not even the floor) to set them!

I don't, but that's just me. We don't have one matching set of anything in the house. Not a matchy matchy decorator.
I say, go with what you like.
