Be careful with treads on stairs please. If the edges curl up or under or if they are not securely fastened, these are more dangerous than bare wood. LM

For safety reasons, I would go with the carpeting, or a runner over hardwood. I'm clumsy and could never have bare wooden steps. If you don't have pets, the steps shouldn't need to be vacuumed too often.
This whole thing reminds me of a story that my husband always tells about how is Mom used to polish their hardwood steps, when she polished the hardwood floors....................................... ![]()

I've always liked the look of a nice wood stair with the treads on them, but in reality, it is just double the work. You now have sweeping and wood floor cleaning both in this area. So if cleaning stairs is an issue, for me, this would just double the work of just keeping carpet on them.

@MominohioAbsolutely agree with this!

Are those treads nailed into the wooden steps? Or do they just lay flat there?

You can have the stairs finished with hardwood then put a stair runner of carpet down the middle, not dangerous at all because it is tacked down. There are also decorative metal bars that go across the runner at the back of the step to hold them in place that are very pretty. However, if ease of care is your only concern, these would still need to be vacuumed, so that would not help.Also, once you place a runner you would need a runner forever because there would be holes in the wood from holding it down.

Hi @Dominosmom
The treads are stuck down with double-sided tape, something specifically made for treads.

That stuff does not work. I just threw almost a whole roll of it out. If it stuck to the carpet then it didn't stick to the floor or vice versa.

Oh I agree, it's not a great product. We tried carpet treads, hated the look and they still slipped around. Threw them away and now have exposed hardwood on the stairs, much better IMO.
