JSD+Oct+2020_196.jpg

It's called "The Madison",  in Grand Rapids.  Acclaimed designer Jean Stoffer (some of whose Grand Rapids work I've shown here before) and her daughter undertook a years-long renovation, with the idea of selling.  But deep into the project, she took it for her own, and she and her husband moved in.

Stately door.

Having a vestibule that can be closed off is so helpful with cold winters.

Their main living area seems to be two adjoining parlors. I like the way you can see into the second one from this one.  One of her trademarks is her predilection for gorgeous rugs, like the one here.

The second parlor has a grand piano.

Both of the parlors seem very comfortable to me.

And it's neat that there's a corner for chess!

Wallpaper is used sparingly, as in the dining room.

And charmingly, in this powder bath.

The kitchen is spacious...

And there's even what appears to be a wow of a butler's pantry:

Love this vignette of meaningful family photos--

That door must lead to an upstairs balcony, nifty.

The bathrooms alone in this house are so interesting and varied, with a hint of their Edwardian heritage...

And of course, I always have major laundry room envy, for great laundry rooms in old houses!

Plus, it's not an old-house-dungeon laundry room, like I have.

And, they even have a cozy upstairs den-like space too.

While I could not live in a huge house myself, my hat's off to Jean Stoffer for rescuing this historic gem and making it liveable for her family.

@Oznell Thanks so much for posting. I love this home! It is beautiful and the rooms are very welcoming...I love that they didn't feel the need to use too much wallpaper all over either...Lots of attention to details inside and out. Gorgeous!!

What a beautiful home! Love the kitchen and I would love a nice pantry like that. So much charm throughout the house. Thanks for posting Oznell.

The only thing I wonder about is no curtains on the windows. With the cold winters they get in Michigan I would think lined curtains would help with warmth in the winter. Having grown up in beautiful western New York, I remember closing our lined curtains when it got dark in the winter to help keep the house warmer.

Really lovely house .... but not somewhereI could live.  I need to live with subdued lighting and lots of color / patterns.

Too many windows - too bright - no curtains - colorless

The rooms are so spacious, the rugs exquisite, the art work in the first parlor beautiful, it is quite an appealing lovely home!  I like most of the furnishings, not all of the lighting fixtures and the bathrooms are  very attractive.  There is appeal in every room.  I do think the butler's pantry is for me  nicer than the kitchen!  The downside is  the windows do not have any curtains or drapes and as I have commented before, that is must for me because it adds warmth and enhances the rooms.  While it is a grand home I would make some change but certainly this is a stunning home outside and inside.

I enjoyed the tour, but it isn't my kind of house or decor.  Well done though I think!
