Of course I love birds-- and owls and pheasants are so "fall-perfect". But posting on the "Cozy Cottage" swan made me remember that almost anything can be incorporated into autumn decor, if you love it.

Was pleasantly struck by blogger 'masterPiecesofmylife' use of her swans for the season:

She started with a gorgeous antique bombe chest, gilt and painted mirror, tray and weathered lanterns.

Her swans, one bedecked with feathers, and the other one spilling acorns, fit right in with the autumnal mood she created--

They are so cute, the little one thrifted for $2.

Love how they bring a sweet, yet jaunty spirit, amid the weathered books and natural elements....

Here's another fall look, more muted, from garden mom871, using few pieces, but to great effect:

Here's one from Our Hopeful Home, with tawny mums, oversize acorn, and tealight, utilizing yummy contrasting textures--

I think she said her dear little swan candle holder was from a dollar store--

There's something about a very weathered carved wood swan, especially combined with rustic wood furniture, that has a "fall feeling",  even without other pieces.  The Inspired Room was lucky enough to receive this vintage one from her mother.  I would go a step further and strew a few leaves around it for fall--

"The Painted South" always goes for abundance, and a French country look.

She thrifted a lucky find, a faux cement or stone swan, that needed repairing, if I remember right. Then she painted and distressed it to give the antique French garden look she likes--

She started with it, a grapevine wreath, evergreen branches and pinecones.  Clever to use the evergreens which can then transition to the Christmas season later--

She filled her swan with a small basket, rustic pumpkins, and fall botanicals and berries...

She carried the look down from the mantel to the flanking side tables, with a wee bird in nest, quail painting, and rustic lantern...

I'd be happy usually with about one third of what she does, as I like a "quieter" fall look, but she does have an artistic eye, and subscribes to 'more is more'.

Interestingly, she said that she tried other things on the mantel, but kept coming back to her swan.

I understand that--  gentle swans magically have a way of contributing nature's charm, while bringing a uniquely serene, peaceful feeling to a room.

Do you have an item, not typically thought of as "fall", that you like to decorate with this season?

What do you think about the wreath on the mirror?  I'm not a fan.

They are too vintage, too cluttered, and just not my style. Number 6 is the only one I would entertain. The bright yellow marigolds are gorgeous, they are the first thing my eye goes to, and they make the whole setup come alive.

I do to, @wagirl ! LOVE the ambience it all creates. I have a beautiful set of porcelain swans that my mother brought home from Japan in 1954, they are in my china cabinet and are quite delicate.

I have a hand carved wooden goose that a neighbor made for my mom, and it lives in front of the back side of our Apple desktop computer in the office.  It hides the base and "stuff".

Re: UNUSUAL FALL VIGNETTE

[ Edited ]

I agree, either the Swan or the Urn, but not both.

To my taste, they both need some space to be appreciated on the tray.

I'm making a mental note about that lovely urn with the velvet pumpkins and dusty greenery.   Very atmospheric

I do love her style and the natural antique feeling of her decor.
