When I was growing up our church gave a red one to ladies whose mothers were alive and a white one to ones whose mothers were dead.

It was always pink carnations if mothers were living and white if they were deceased.  I never saw red carnations be given away.

Carnations were my moms favorite flower, I usually place pink or yellow carnations at her gravesite when I visit.  Happy Mothers Day, Mom!

My mother stopped going to church on mother's day when she was "recognized" (called out to her!) as being the oldest mother!    

True story!  Typical of my mom!
