I was just thinking about how much many of us don't eat the way we used to, and thinking fresh fruit after a big meal sounds good to me.  Especially sweet/tart apples and grapes, maybe some pears?

Anyone doing this???  Or will I be shamed for even mentioning it?  Woman Surprised

@Sooner No shame from me!  The closest thing to the apples...is an apple crisp. 😊

My little grandkids don't care for pumpkin pie...so they always request my standby. We always have a bowl of green grapes too.  I like the idea of some pears as well.

@Mombo1 You reminded me an aunt brought fruit salad and she PEELED the grapes in it.

@Sooner  Not sure how he does it but when my husband eats grapes he peels them in his mouth, spits out the peel! He is a huge fruit eater.

My Italian  Mom always served Tangerines. Pomegranates,  Grapes along with Roasted Chestnuts in season.  Also she  cut up Fennel  which helps with digestion & helps freshen breath.  Of course there was all kinds of homemade Italian pastries, pies & lemon ice or Gelato & she served coffee or Espresso.  This was a normal thing with my Italian Family especially for the Holidays.

We had exactly the same but also a bowl of mixed nuts with the non decorative silver nutcrackers.

I still love finocchio and buy it all the time.

Did your family call regular coffee, brown coffee or American coffee?  😊

[ Edited ]

Sliced fennel  and sliced blood oranges on a platter with sprigs of green .

I used to put out various roasted nuts  but found pistachios were the most popular.

One year I put three small signs on the table "please don't shell the nuts with your teeth".

An hour or two after dinner we would serve hot coffee and tea with lots of homemade Italian cookies and a cheesecake.

Wine for the  adults and a soft drink with a bit if wine mixed in for the younger ones.

Everyone is too stuffed after a big meal to want or enjoy an apple.

i do a tray of berries with fresh whipped cream.

strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries. it is very pretty and colorful. add some fresh sprigs of mint also.

sometimes i buy the philadelphia cheesecake filling that comes in a tub and serve that as a "dip" on the side.

A fruit/veg plate is part of the meal.  Cut grapes, kiwi, pineapple chunks, blueberries, raspberries, cherry tomatoes, red pepper slices and so forth.  This is  a common part of get togethers at DS and DIL's.

Definitly not desert which is apple pie, sweet potatoe pie, cake, brownies, cookies.

@Tori3569  Yep, in my Italian family we called it brown coffee too. LOL.

After dinner, we were all asked Brown or black (Espresso). Those days were so fun.

@Marp I dont know if you have a Sam's Club nearby but they have wonderful pineapple spears in coconut water that I chunked up for a party. It is absolutely delicious.

Thanks for replying!  I agree 100%.  I miss the house full of people my parents would have for every holiday.
