I tend to do both.
Some places and things seem to call for symetry, other don't.
I really don't like a room that people have decided two of everything is needed. Two matching end tables on either side of the sofa, two matching lamps on those tables, two matching toss pillows on the sofa, two matching arrangements on either end of the mantel. etc.
Too much of it just looks like a furniture store display room.
I work in groups of threes a lot, or simply big single items with a smaller one tucked beside it.

I try more symmetrically.

@PA Mom-mom wrote:@Oznell The only symmetrical place in our house is in our family room. But it isn't really symmetrical. The cabinets are not even on each side, and our mantel decor isn't quite the same. I like it that way
Is this picture your house? This room and mantel are simply stunning! Is the house really old?
Geeze. I'm have a terrible jealous fit here! This is the kind of room/house I am supposed to be (BORN to be) living in!
Adopt me.

I love built in cabinetry also.

I also use symmetry, and I'm not too happy about it. I really wish I could get away from it, and come up with something more creative. I guess I should take more time to experiment.

@Mominohio and @froggy and @Oznell Thank you for your comments! My husband collects the books. We live in a 34 year old house in a development. We were lucky to be in on our house from the ground up, so we got to add some extras. This wall was one of them. I designed it when I was in the hospital after giving birth to our daughter. A local cabinet maker made it, and for very little. We could never afford to have it done now. There is lots of storage behind those doors. We were so glad when the battery operated candles came on the market. Scraping wax off the mantel gets old.

I like things that are a little different so symmetry is not normally how I decorate.
I do like my windows to match with window candles, Holiday decorations, wreaths, etc but that's about it.

@PA Mom-momHow wonderful that you were able to customize your home like that! We did supervise the building of our home in a development and to choose a lot of options but there are so many things I wish I had done!

I would say that it varies depending on the room. I have a semi open floor plan so in those rooms I usually do accents in pairs. In the hallways I either do accents in threes or one unique accent piece. In the family room area (which is jumbo size) I do scones and candles in five.

Yes but it happens naturally. I don't put a lot of thought into it. I don't plan it. It just happens. It's probably brain thing.
