Enough of RFID! You do not need RFID protection -- it's just a way to sell new handbags. And retailers have embraced this hook line and sinker... A "chip" does NOT mean RFID. This is fear of something that you probably don't have.

(1) Those chips on your new credit card DO NOT broadcast a signal; they must be INSERTED into the readers to work. Europeans have been using this technology for more than a decade. It is much more secure than swiping. (2) Only the ID cards and payment cards that you WAVE in front of a reader use an RF signal. Even then, you have to be very close. (3) Criminals are more likely to steal your personal information from lists they get online where they can harvest thousands of names at one time. Following people around in stores is not an efficient way to make money from stealing. (4) The future is going to be paying through Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. on your smartphone. Sooner than you think you won't actually have plastic cards.

I buy the handbag if I like it, but not for the RFID protection. I have checked with banking IT people and have read articles in tech magazines and Consumer Reports. You can check this information.Call your bank's customer service. I have even asked the State Department about my passport: no RFID in it.

@DZPSorry -  it's the buyers, not the sellers, who have embraced the technology hook line and sinker.-  think where the hook is when the fisher is proficient.

I'm not arguing with what I think you mean, but work on your use of metaphors.  They're fun when the work well.

@DZP

Thank you for the clear, concise presentation of RFID facts and how the consumer fears are being taken advantage of.

Shame on those retailers who continue to feed the frenzy.

Just my first thought ....telling a new poster (or anyone,really) to  "work on your metaphors" is rude. This definitely is not a classroom. I am honestly am not trying to throw shade or start an argument. The comment was like a record scratch to my brain. What a way to welcome a new poster.

I know, it's just another way of being snarky in the guise of being " helpful" .

Some of my cards do have to be waved and not swiped.  We have stores that have removed their swiping machines.  I hate those cards.  It takes time for the card to be read and you have to just hold it there in the air.  I have no idea what can happen while this process is happening.  At that point can my card be read by others?  I chose not to shop where I can not swipe and quickly put my card back.  My bank gives me a sleeve with my bank card and tells us to use it for security.  I have purchased a small RFID case that holds several cards.  The bank checked the case and my cards do not send a signal when inside the case.  My bank account was hit last year.  Thank goodness I go on line to check my account when I return from shopping trips.   I was only checking to make sure I had entered all of my purchases.  I saw something that was not mine and immediately called and went to the bank.  I was fast enough that the bank was able to stopped the transaction.  I use a credit card when I shop but had swipped my bank card at the reputable motel.  I do not need RFID in a purse because I have the RFID case.  The crooks will always be ahead of the public it seems.  We have to be extremely vigilant and keep informed.  I appreciate the information that I get on these forums.  I use this information to go read to inform myself and my family.  Thank you all.

The problem is that many of our current cards have BOTH a chip and a slide.

You are right, if it ONLY had the chip.

Re: Handbag technology

[ Edited ]

My passport card came in a foil lined sleeve with instructions not to remove it permanently from the sleeve as it contains access to all my personal information. They don't do all that for nothing.

Why can't some posters understand this is a place for conversation -- not an English classroom? Correcting people's spelling or grammer is RUDE !!!!
