Re: when do you empty annual pots?

The weather has been great here in the Hudson Valley of NYS. I have already pitched some petunias they were real stragglers and yesterday gave up on the one and only impatient pot that I bought from Home Depot in May. Begonias are still doing well so I will let them be.

I did give in and buy one small mum plant from the supermarket to fill up an empty pot. So I will enjoy what I have through the fall. Looking forward to more glorious sunny days in Sept, Oct and Nov and the Montauk Daisies that will pop in a few weeks.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I have been impressed with the choices and the hardiness of the hanging pots from Walmart this year. My winter pansies were outstanding and lasted through a couple of good snow storms before succumbing to ice. The petunias have been wonderful. For $4.99 a pot I am not complaining.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I usually pull the plants out of the three large pots toward the end of September and replace with tulip bulbs with winter pansies over the top. I pulled my window boxes out early because I just had my house painted and did not think it was a good idea to water them over fresh paint!

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I should probably do it sooner than I do. But usually when I see that they are getting leggy and weird (those are gardening terms, correct?Cool). I have Coleus in one sunny spot that is getting leggy and that may go sooner than later. I have other coleus, that's not exposed to such direct sunlight that seems to be doing just fine. So those can stay a while.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I emptied mine yesterday and put them away. I am in NE Ohio. I have four REALLY large pink ceramic urns and it takes a dolly to get them into the garage. The flowers didn't look all that great in them anymore, and I want to get my wheelbarrow out that I use in the fall and winter months. Pink pots just don't go with wheelbarrows and hay bales! LOL!

I am emptying mine tomorrow. I've had out of state company for a week or I would have done it sooner. So tired of summer, ready for fall.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I emptied the pots in the front yard last week (petunias and begonias). I am empting the hanging baskets, begonias and three large pots on patio that have geraniums in them today. I am replanting the large pots (you can see them from family room) with tulips and over the top I am putting violas. I have some pansies to plant in a couple of pots in yard that you see from house. I am also thinning out some vinca today and moving some volunteer ferns to other spots in yard. I better get busy!

I cleared out the flowers but the pots stay out year round.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

I'm in NJ and my annuals are still thriving. I cannot bring myself to emptying them. I have mums on the porch so moved the rest of the annuals to the side yard.

In my cutting garden, my cosmos are 5-6 feet tall and blooming like crazy. There are 2 shades of pink, magenta and white, more colors than I've ever had. I do not ever remember planting them and every year there are more and more.

Re: when do you empty annual pots?

On the one hand, you want to keep annuals as long as they're still looking good, in some cases until first frost. On the other hand, they can look out of place in a fall landscape, like you're in denial about summer's end.
