watermelon-when does it appear?

We have beautiful leaves and vines and lil flowers, no sign of a melon anywhere? We water and it looks so healthy and green, no watermelon yet.

It may depend upon what zone you live in and whether you have been hit by the brutal heat like so much of the country. The heat could effect fruit production.

Re: watermelon-when does it appear?

I don't have watermelons planted this year, but I do have cantaloupes.

If your female flowers are not pollinated, you will not get fruit.  In the past several years, bees are not plentiful.  Insects like bees visit the male and female flowers and they pollinate them.

I pollinated my cantaloupe flowers myself.  I rubbed a small paintbrush into the male flower to gather the pollen, then rubbed the paintbrush right after into a female flower.

In about two days, I had fruit about the size of an egg.

You might want to pollinate your watermelon flowers yourself. By now, you should have fruits on your vine.

This is a picture of female flowers. They have a small fruit bulb under the flower. You will probably have more male flowers and will have to search to find the females.. Best of luck.

Probably a male - female thing. Pollination must occur.

 We have 1 watermelon growing now. I pruned the watermelon vine because it was going everywhere. I haven't had to water the garden in a couple months due to lots of rain. I'm in Rhode Island. Good luck.

@Barb999

I would cut some length off the ends of the vine and pull off a couple of flowers, to stimulate the production of an actual melon.

The growing season is nearly over here in WV, so if we don't have melons on the vine in July, we're not going to be eating melons from the garden.
