My DH asked me to plant a couple pots with red sage  so I did. I never planted these flowers before so I need to ask -- when the flowers die off am I supposed to deadhead them? Like geraniums or petunias. Also - do they get any fuller or just grow taller. If they aren't going to get any fuller I need to add something else to the pots to fill them out.

Re: red sage question

There are dozens of types of sages.  Do you have a picture of the one you got?  Most are not dead-headed.  When I googled it I got a plant, a salvia, we call autumn sage.  It grows into a small bush 3' high at most and 2-3' wide.   They are cold hardy here but I don't know about Pa.

If it is red salvia, yes i would put either white flowers with it, or yellow.

  • Probably best to check a gardening website or google like kachina did.

The little tag called them red sage but , yes, they are red salvia. No wonder I could not find them when I googled, I was calling them the wrong thing. They do require deadheading and a lot of fertilizer it seems.

I have seen blue lobelia paired with red salvia.  Dusty miller also looks good.

Both are readily available this time of year.
