Last year i planted some lettuce seeds, some in pots,some in the ground,well this year i had lettuce come up ,that was planted in the ground, i did not think it would do that here in maine.

It must have "bolted" (gone to seed) and some of the seeds remained viable in the soil.
I think you have snow in your area(?). Strange thing, it actually acts as an insulator in some circumstances.

Hopefully if you have those grey, black and/or red fuzzy things with the long bushy tails called squirrels, they won't eat your produce.
DH planted some early lettuce here in a round planter - our squirrel ate himself all around the planter. First batch of lettuce enjoyed not by us!!!
We'll be planting more later in the planters in pots on 2nd story patio and hope for the best. Squirrels didn't seem to bother last yr's crop up there.
