I purchased two sets of Stone Mountain leather garden gloves from Q. One set was the normal glove and one set was elbow lenth. I love them because they hold up to rose thorns and hollly branches. Note: these gloves run small but I have small hands so it really works nicely for me.

I use rose gloves from Womanswork dot com. They are half way up my forearm and are made of leather. There is a handy measuring guide to determine what size gloves you wear and you can contact them before ordering if you want to.

I second @JustJazzmom's recommendation, they work great on my thorny roses.

For everyday tasks I buy those rubber palmed knit gloves, wash them and wear until they get holes, then buy a new pair.

Count me in for Womanswork, too! I got my first pair last Fall at an outlet for $10. They're the pale grey goatskin gardening gloves and run $36 on their website. These are the best gardening gloves I've ever owned and I'm thinking about getting the gauntlets to protect my arms when I'm clearing thistle and other thorny brush in our back yard. I've had other "heavy duty" gardening gloves that couldn't stand up to the thorns in thistle and left me with red welts on my hands and forearms. I first wore my Womanswork gloves when I was setting up my planters last month. I wore them for 5 or 6 hours removing old potting soil, adding new soil, and getting new plants settled in the pots. After all that time and work, there was no dirt on my hands. My hands were so clean I could have started making dinner straight in from the garden (but I didn't). I didn't have any blisters, either!  I also buy "disposable" gardening gloves for simple tasks, but I'm going to make sure I use these for any heavy duty yard work. I wish I could remember which outlet I bought my first pair from. That was a great buy!

Years ago I found a pair of pinkish leather gardening gloves that came up above my elbows.  Think it was at Marshalls or TJ Maxx.

Those gloves really protected my arms when I was shaping all the evergreen trees and bushes: I became sensitive to the needles and would break out in huge welts.  The gloves were a godsend but I can't find them in DH's garage.

( They are pink so I know he won't wear them, plus they are too small for him ! )

I finally stopped shaping the spiral evergreen trees and the " snowball" type pine bushes.  Saved hours of needless work: they all are looking great---getting back to normal.

I like Atlas Therma Fit gloves - polyester knit with rubber palms and finger tips.  They fit snuggly and, with rubber tips, I can pick even the smallest weed.
