Interesting you should mention lack of birds.  I've noticed the same thing over the last year or so.  Not only do I have less than half the number of birds coming to my feeders, but I've also noticed fewer kinds of birds.

I live rural with lots of surrounding woods.  In addition to fewer birds and squirrels at my feeders, there are a lot fewer everywhere.  The woods are almost silent much of the time now.

The birds have always been one of the things I've enjoyed most about living here.☹️

That is a big reason why we have 3 bird feeders and 2 suet holders. We liked to see all the birds. And we were getting quite a variety. We even have 2 Audubon guides by the back door because we were getting so many different birds.

We even bought new bird houses because the birds weren't using the old ones. Well, they didn't use the new ones either.

I must admit earlier in the year the starlings took over. But haven't seen a starling in awhile.

Re: Squirrel Diet

[ Edited ]

Well, I am so happy.

There is a well fed squirrel sitting right now under the bird feeders. He is muching away on crumbs from the cranberry walnut bread. Whenever I slice the bread I get a bunch of crumbs and also with English muffins. So I put all the crumbs under the bird feeders.

He seems happy and well rounded. Guess you all were right, he stored the peanuts in his winter pantry somewhere. Thanks for making me feel better that he would be ok.

We have squirrels everywhere. They are such a nuisance and  empty my birdfeeder despite a baffle and several other attempts to keep them out. Don't even bother with feeders that say " squirrel proof".

Squirrels can devour lots of peanuts in no time at all. You didn't make the squirrel sick,  but birds also like peanuts if they are big enough to pick them up. Bluejays and cardinals take them from the birdseed mixture I use.

The squirrels you are missing are probably all at my house, chewing up something else on the patio.
