Scentables Roses: is this black spot?

I purchased 2 of th Girl Next Door Scentables Roses.  They looked great in the first photo when I planted them.  Now, a week later I see these spots in the second photo and wonder if they are black spot.  Black spot seems closest to descriptions and photos online.  I've removed all the spotted leaves and sprayed with a 3 in 1 product that includes disease coverage.  Is there anything else I should do?   I have 16 roses in the ground and haven't had to deal with black spot.  I'm in zone 9 where it's generally dry although it rained yesterday and the pots were under the patio cover.

I'm no expert, though that looks like something other than what I thought black spot looked like. But, if you have Facebook, post to Carolyn's page...she says she reads it all and either answers or gets someone to.

Or your local nursery should also be able to help.

Good luck...I hope you save it. Those roses looked beautiful in her show...I just was watching the rerun of it earlier today...they only had the pink ones left.

@Wobin On my computer, some of the leaves look like some rose rust. Look at pictures of rose rust since you can check your actual rose bush and see if that might be it. I had one entire little bush of apricot-colored roses devoured by some illness, all the leaves dropped, we were away at the time so I couldn't figure out what it was, then it came back to a beauty within the same growing season. Thank goodness! Good luck!

Re: Scentables Roses: is this black spot?

I grow roses and  in looking at the pictures I think one of the problems is insect infestation. The picture where it looks like the "green" has faded off could posibly be a tiny bug eating that part off the leaf. Look at the back of the leaf to see if the little culprit is enjoying his snack. I can't think of his name right now. It's past my bedtime and I've had a busy day!!! I'll get back to this in the morning. You have a healthy plant and I think any of the problems can be corrected with a little help.....

 Thank you, I did and black spot seemed to be closest and not all of the spots on the examples were black as I expected.

Thank you, I'll do that.  I wanted to try patio roses and got sucked in even though I had pledged no mail order plants except J&P roses!

I did spray with a 3-in-1 that covers insects so I hope that does it.  Thank you.

@Wobin

If I had to guess, to me it looks like a disease. My first thought was Black Spot. It begins at the bottom leaves and works its way up. (so does Rust!) However, upon looking at it further, it could be Downy Mildew. Black spot and downy mildew can look very similar. With downy mildew the spotting runs along the veins of the leaves.

You mentioned that you had 16 roses in the ground. (I hope one day you will share names and photos!) Smiley HappyI would be concerned that the spores from this bush could spread to any of your other bushes...depending on what it is...sometimes the wind can spread pathogens. Just in case, if you didn't clean your pruners, just use rubbing alcohol. Pruners easily spread disease.

I would definitely go to Carolyn's Facebook page. I, too, have heard her say that she reads all posts and if you have a problem or question she will help you. She is by far more of an expert and can better guide you, than probably most of us.  Plus, she will know where the roses were grown.

Be grateful that you never had to deal with black spot. It is the worst disease to control. Smiley Sad Though, since it is not a problem in your area, you should be able to get an early handle on it, if that is the problem. Keep in mind, that one spraying won't do. You must follow up with additional sprays. I always use the BioAdvanced Disease Control. It doesn't include an insecticide, which can kill bees, etc. I try to treat any insects as needed. e.g. Japanese Beetles I just flick them into a cup of soapy water.  Unfortunately, wildlife can also become poisoned e.g. birds that eat poisoned insects become poisoned. Smiley Sad

Good luck and please keep us updated so we all can learn from your experience! Heart
