I'm in Western PA and saw the first male today. I think one shows up to see if food is available and then tells the rest. In years past, I have had as many as 20 at one time, but sadly, they are only here for a week or two at the most. They are beautiful, aren't they.

I have had here for several years (maybe since Hurricane Irene?) a red headed woodpecker that is about 9"" in length who visits my feeders (mostly the peanut feeder) in the winter and spring. He is gorgeous and he is still a 'bachelor'. I am now seeing that the male goldfinches have gotten their bright yellow feathers back again and the red winged blackbirds have been back since mid March. I think of them as the sign of spring has come back rather than the robins.
I love when the blackbirds and blue jays bring their 'babies' to the feeder in the summer. Those 'babies' are the size of the adults only with juvenile feathers (matte color to the youngsters --blackbirds and no crests and grayish blue feathers on the blue jays).

We had several of those last year, and only one this year so far. We also had several birds that we could best identify as Pine Grossbeaks. Never saw them before.
Earlier this spring we had a dozen or so gorgeous blue buntings for the second year in a row. And a pair of painted buntings - beautiful! We get a few bluebirds each year, but they never stay - just pass through, enjoy a few meals and keep going.
I've acquired a crow- just one crow - who comes every morning at about 7:00, and again at 4:30 in the afternoon. He sat in the tree one day and yelled at me until I finally gave him a bit of bread, which he woofed down. Now he gets bread with peanut butter, and comes daily to get his snack, which has expanded to sausages and leftovers. He also has a great interest in peanuts when I put them out for the squirrels who come to my office door. Two of them now try to take the peanuts from my hand. The crow can put four of them in his mouth (or down his throat) at one time.
And we have a wild rabbit who has become very tame. And dozens of Canada geese which have found some nearby ponds and our lake. They seem to have forgotten about Canada for the time being. We have great fun with the critters here.

We feed and watch many birds. The grosbeaks have just come back. We are now waiting for our humming birds.
We also have many wood peckers. One is so big and has a head like Woody woodpecker and a large wing span.
We feed our birds all year long. In the summer once a day and in the winter some times 2 or 3 times a day.

Smokie: I was born and raised in Western PA (New Castle). I miss it sometimes.

He's a Pileated woodpecker. They aren't too common anymore. We lost a lot of ours back when Katrina hit - either they went north or were blown away. Sorry we don't have many now - they are interesting.

This is the one that keeps visiting my feeder:They call it a red bellied woodpecker. I think someone was mixed up when naming this guy!

The Grosbeaks just showed up at our feeders. I always look forward to those and the Indigo Buntings. My hummingbirds just showed up this week too. My hummers fly by the feeders to my Black and Blue Salvia.
