I had some local gardening friends recommend an app called Picture This. I downloaded it today on my iPhone and used it when I went out for a walk around the neighborhood. I'm using the free version which means when I open it, it sometimes asks if I want to sign up for a paid subscription, so I have to tap the "x" in the top right corner to continue--a little inconvenient, but so far, I think the app is a good one.
I tap on the camera icon and take a picture of the plant or leaves on a tree, and it tells me what it is. Today I learned that the 2 ft. thing with big leaves that popped up under my camelia next to my front porch is a southern magnolia. Yikes! 😳 Got the shovel out right away! 🤣 Then I learned that the tree down the street that always looks beautiful in the spring but sickly in the summer is an elm.
I look forward to trying it out when I go walking on the trails in the park because the city has planted lots of pretty things, but I don't know what they are. I recommend trying out this app called Picture This if you're like me and need some help every now and then with identification.

@wildcat fan Sounds like a fun app. Thanks.
We have Siberian Elms all over the place. I fight them constantly. A weed that easily turns into a 30ft tree. Everywhere there's a drop of water, these things sprout from blown in seeds.

@wildcat fan Thanks. I just added it. There have been many times when I wanted to know what something was but didn't want to play hunt and search.

I hope it works for you. I practiced on some plants that I knew just to see how it did and I was impressed. I'm not planning to sign up for Premium membership. I just took a look at some online reviews, and they seem mixed with some people expressing frustration when they tried to cancel the membership, so I'd suggest you really make sure it's something you want before you sign up. As I stated earlier, I found out about it from some local gardeners who like it and thought I'd pass it on. I think the free version will meet my needs just fine.
ETA: I wanted to add that another plant identification app that's gotten good feedback around here is called Plant Snap. I've got both of them on my phone now. I plan to try Plant Snap tomorrow to see which one I like best.
Also, don't forget that if you're in a place like Lowe's or Home Depot, a lot of their plants have QR codes on the tags. If you have a QR code reader app on your phone, you can scan it and immediately get more details about the plant.

Thank you for suggesting. I took picture of a weed that we have been fighting for years. It's a start.
