I just moved up on top of a mountain. I knew deer would be a problem and little water due to a well and only having rain barrels to water with. I selected Devil's trumpets Datura. I got the seeds from a seller on ebay and have them started in peet pots. I'm planning on putting them under the trees in our parked out yard.

I am also buying crepe myrtles, and butterfly bushes to add to the garden.

They won't touch Rhododendron bush - I watched deer in my front garden check it out and continued on their way. (never prune in the Fall because flowers set their buds in the Fall for next season) You trim = you get no flowers in the Spring.

LOL a couple of years ago I went to peek out the window on a fine spring morning and, instead of seeing the beautiful array of tulips that had been there just the day before, saw only stems. I shrieked, then went to the garden shop and picked up some deer repellant spray--not the kind with smelly dried blood/eggs, but the pepper spray (yuck).
I've been spraying it in and around the tulip petals that are emerging now, before they even bloom, then I do the same when I see flowers. Works like a charm.

It's early spring here and the hostas are just now peaking their blue tips out of the ground. I saw some deer nibbling going on so I went out this morning to the dollar store and bought 4 shakers of cayenne pepper and have sprinkled it and will continue to sprinkle it if I see anymore nibbling. I do know that if it rains I'll have to re-apply but that's okay it is an inexpensive treatment.
I gave up planting annuals in the ground here in NY and have reverted to planting my annuals in containers on my deck. As I get older this works better for me. Easier to care for.

Begonias and snap dragons.

Well, so far so good with the Irish Spring shavings around the garden. I have seen the deer in the back yard and they are not even approaching my daughter's cabbage plant! My hostas are peeking out now, so I will put some shavings around there, but they already chewed the 80+ tulips I planted! GRRRRR.... Maybe next year I can catch them early enough for the tulips.
I will also try the flowers/bushes that everyone is suggesting. I had tried the cayenne pepper last year. It worked pretty good on the squirrels and rabbits but didn't seem to deter the deer at all.
