My Roses and Lilacs Are In Full Bloom

[ Edited ]

Good morning Q friends!   The fragrance coming from my yard is intoxicating!  Opening a window or door or going outside to get the mail or into your car, the smell of blooming roses and lilacs fill the air.   Thought I would share a picture of the Knockout Roses in the back of house and the Lilac bushes on the side of my house.  Close your eyes....breathe in...can you smell the beautiful fragrance?20240517_142720.jpg20220524_155734.jpg

Exquisite!

My mother loved both and so do I.   I remember cutting lilacs for her and bringing in huge bouquets.  They are such fragile blossoms.

Unfortunately, the deer would eat those down to the dirt where I live now.  Plus, our soil is clay/gravel, so not good for planting anything.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful flowers!

Re: My Roses and Lilacs Are In Full Bloom

I have a gorgeous lilac bush about 8ft in diameter in a far corner of the backyard.  I've never watered, fertilized or pruned it and it blooms like crazy.  Absolutely nobody can see it, including me in the house.  It's got a high fence on 2 sides so the neighbors can't see it and it can't be seen from the street.  It's a shame it's not in the front yard.

We have a dry,  high desert climate with soil that's about 85% sand and is like concrete.

You likely have the type of lilac that grows upwards of 8 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide.  These particular lilac bushes are a dwarfed variety and only grow about 4-5 feet tall and about 4-5 feet wide.  My neighbor has the variety you have and hers is like a tree with long hanging lilacs with larger blossoms.

So welcoming to see the first blooms.

I got to cut my first dahlia this week!  Not really suited to my climate but I have a sunny clearing and love them.

@ciao_bella,

I was wondering what the difference is. I've never seen or heard of a lilac bush only trees so that is another something I never knew!Heart

My mother taught us the difference between lilac and wisteria trees.

And my father told us what those huge huge periwinkle gorgeous trees growing along the highways were-

Paulownia or Empress or Princess treesWhat Are Those Purple Flowering Trees—Native Redbud or Invasive Paulownia?

They look like wisteria but grow upwards instead of branches and leaves hanging down. They really are gorgeous and huge and when you see them you think what are those?!

@on the bay  Yes!  I've often seen those growing along roads and major highways.  I always thought they were wisteria, but I see now that these grow upwards and don't hang like big wisteria clusters.  My sister told me once that many of these wild growing roadside plants/trees, including wisteria, will strangle other plants growing around them so they have all the room to grow and prosper.

@ciao_bella,

Yes, my father said they take over everything! Not very nice but they sure are spectacular!
