Kneehigh by the Fourth of July

While riding through the countryside this past weekend, I couldn't help notice the corn is at least 5 or 6 feet tall in the fields.  This is well beyond the old saying "kneehigh by the fourth of July".

How does the corn look in your neck of the woods?

At least 6 or 7 feet thanks to all the rain we've had in PA.  Farmers are happy about that and I'm happy for them.

Re: Kneehigh by the Fourth of July

I remember one year a guy I knew who grew sweet corn said, his corn was high as an elephants eye, bye the 4th of July. The corn around here is about 5 or 6 ft.

I don't know where that saying "kneehigh by the fourth of July" came from, because it seems to be far from true unless you're in a drought-stricken area.

Re: Kneehigh by the Fourth of July

We were at an Amish farmstand getting snow peas and brussel sprouts and the farmer said the corn stalks are high but due to lack of sun there is no corn on the stalks. If the weather doesn't improve there will be little or no corn this year locally. he also said the tomatoes are not going to be good unless they get a lot of sun.

Re: Kneehigh by the Fourth of July

I am in southern WV, and have heard that expression my entire life. Many years ago when my girls were small, we were driving through another WV county and passed a huge field of sweet corn. I jokingly made the comment that the corn was in direct violation of the WV corn law. My husband laughed, and our girls questioned my comment. My answer was that WV corn is supposed to be at least knee high by the 4th of July, and that's exactly how my grandpa had looked at it when he was farming. My oldest daughter has never forgotten my words, and after a recent trip upstate for a conference, she mentioned that the corn in that area of the state was violating the WV corn law. My response was that her great grandpa would be proud she noticed!
