I bought some irises and they were delivered yesterday, and just now my husband planted them for me (I have a bad back).
We tried to place them so that the tallest ones would be in the back, then the next tallest ones, etc. I love bulbs because once you get the soil prepared and the holes or trenches dug, you just put the bulb in and...poof! that's it till spring.
I don't remember which bulbs got planted where but as far as I'm concerned, that's half the fun: what's going to show up where?
And the conditions couldn't be better: we had a hotter than usual summer and overnight, had an unusually hard rainstorm. Therefore the soil is just about right for planting. When my bulbs come up in the spring, I'll post pictures and you can help me guess what they are

I'm looking for just a few - say, five or six - purple tulip bulbs. The usual places selling bulbs in bulk have let me down so far.

I have many iris in my yard and I just love them. I wish they lasted longer. Last year I separated them and gave away at least 200 rizomes. Just remember that they may not bloom the first year. They really need to get established. In the Spring throw some bone meal them to fertilize.

Let's not rush the seasons. It will be spring (the one or two weeks we get) and before we know it summer will be back. I like fall and winter and I'm ready for a cool down.

You don't really need to *plant* them. They don't like to be buried under dirt. I sort of just lay the tubers on the ground and cover the roots to them. Even if it's just mulch covering them.
I've actually thrown some behind a garage and forgot about them and they *took*.
They don't care to be drenched like other flowers, so make sure you don't plant them with flowers or shrubs that *wilt* if not watered daily.
